We are seeking a passionate and skilled Consultant Urologist to join our innovative team at South Tyneside and Sunderland Hospital. This role focuses on penile cancer and andrology services.
The Trust is the Supra-regional centre for penile cancer surgery covering a population of 3.2 million. You will join a high-performing team delivering high-quality care across elective and emergency pathways. The post includes timetabled theatre lists, outpatient clinics, flexible cystoscopy, and participation in the weekly Urology Cancer MDT. In-house mentoring will be available to support development in Penile cancer and andrology surgery, as required.
Our department operates across a wide geographical area in the North East, serving a population of over 1,000,000. We are a designated Cancer Centre for Urology, offering advanced procedures including robotic surgery, cryotherapy, and reconstructive techniques.

Main duties of the job
This post focuses on penile cancer and andrology services. The successful candidate will contribute to the assessment and management of patients with suspected and confirmed penile cancer, working as part of the established multidisciplinary pathway and contributing to specialist outpatient clinics, diagnostic services, MDT working and surgical management. The post holder will also support and further develop the departments andrology service, including the assessment and management of erectile dysfunction, Peyronies disease and other andrological conditions, with the precise scope of specialist surgical practice reflecting the successful candidates training and experience.
Alongside their subspecialist responsibilities, the post holder will contribute fully to the delivery of core and general urology services within the department of 15 Consultant Urologists. This will include general urology outpatient clinics, diagnostic and operative activity, management of acute and emergency urological conditions, inpatient care and participation in the Consultant Urology on-call rota (1 in 12). The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team, contributing to clinical governance, audit, teaching, service development and the continued delivery of a high-quality, efficient and patient-centred urology service.

The post holder will join the existing team of consultants and will participate in the on-call rota.
Overall responsibilities include the co-ordination and delivery of the strategic and operational aspects of the Urology Services across Sunderland and South Tyneside and the wider sub-regional catchment area. These will reflect National and Local priorities including the strategic direction of STSFT and the Directorate of Urology.
The post holder is expected to possess CCT or equivalent and to be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post.
The post holder is expected to attend Directorate meetings and take part in Audit and Clinical Governance. Audit takes place monthly on a rolling half day. The post-holder will undergo annual appraisal, as do all medical staff in the Directorate. The post holder will also be expected to develop the Service in keeping with National guidance.

Experience Essential
Full general ENT surgical training with experience of general Urology with sub-specialty expertise in prostate and bladder Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance process and resource issues Evidence of organisational, management and time management skills Experience of supervising junior medical staff Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills
Desirable
Fellowship in the area of subspeciality interest Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding management goals Management course and / or certificate Qualification in medical education
Qualifications Essential
Primary medical qualification Full GMC registration Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC [there is flexibility with the 6-month period with Executive Medical Director approval]
