The IACUC Coordinator supports the timely, accurate review and administration of animal research protocols for UTHealth Houston’s Animal Welfare Committee. This role supports protocol review and compliance activities, maintains required records and documentation, collaborates with researchers, committee members, and staff, and assists with a variety of administrative and oversight functions related to animal research. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and an effective communicator, with at least a bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of related experience in animal care and use. Position Summary: The Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) Coordinator assists in overseeing the operational issues necessary to ensure the timely and accurate processing of protocol submissions to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and provides assistance to ensure that the daily needs of the IACUC and investigators are addressed. Position Key Accountabilities:
• Serves as a coordinator for the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC), primarily responsible for coordinating intake, pre-review, and assigning submissions. • Ensures that the documentation is in compliance with all Federal and State laws and regulations. • Coordinates IACUC meetings; takes accurate minutes of meetings and files appropriate reports of the minutes within timeframes required by institutional and departmental policies. • Drafts and coordinates communications amongst IACUC staff, members, and researchers. • Assists investigators and research staff with the preparation of research submissions to ensure compliance with federal regulations. • Assists in reviewing pending and approved regulations and guidelines. • Assists in the orientation of new committee members. • Participates in semi-annual inspections and post approval monitoring activities. • May provide work direction and guidance to support staff within the department and may lead projects and activities. • Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
• Basic knowledge of federal regulations and Public Health Service policies and guidelines regarding animal welfare in research. • Basic organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills and the ability to comfortably interact with various levels of management, research faculty, staff, and students. • Must be detail-oriented with time management skills. • Proficient knowledge of MS Office • Work may involve handling biohazardous, chemical, and radiological materials, as well as operating associated equipment. Required safety training and appropriate engineering and administrative controls, including the use of personal protective equipment, must be followed. • Certified Professional in Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Administration (CPIA) by Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) Minimum Education: At least a Bachelor's Degree is required. Minimum Experience: At least two (2) years of related experience in the area of animal care and use, institutional review, research administration, audit, or other area of research, compliance, or oversight required Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects. Security Sensitive: This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code §117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position.
