About this role
PURPOSE OF ROLE
The Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedic works within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide high-quality emergency and non-emergency medical care within a mining and remote-site environment.
The role includes responding to medical and trauma emergencies, providing advanced life support and pre-hospital care, stabilising patients at the scene, and supporting the safe transfer and evacuation of patients to an appropriate healthcare facility. The ALS Paramedic also provides clinical oversight, guidance and support to Clinical Officers delivering primary healthcare services at the First Aid Stations.
The role further contributes to emergency preparedness, clinical training, quality and clinical governance activities, and the provision of medical support to remote and exploration operations, including topside support where required.
The successful candidate will be expected to practise safely, ethically and in accordance with current evidence-based emergency care standards, within their professional scope of practice and in compliance with the requirements and standards of the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Provide high-quality Advanced Life Support (ALS) assessment, treatment, resuscitation and stabilisation for medical and trauma emergencies, including patient transfer and medical evacuation support where required.
• Provide clinical oversight, guidance and support to Clinical Officers delivering primary healthcare services at the First Aid Stations, including appropriate escalation of complex cases and maintenance of clinical standards.
• Provide medical support to remote and exploration teams, including topside clinical support, remote medical advice and emergency/evacuation coordination.
• Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary clinical teams, operational stakeholders and receiving facilities to support coordinated patient care, emergency response and medical evacuation.
• Contribute to clinical governance and quality assurance, including the development, review and implementation of clinical protocols and SOPs, clinical audit, case and incident review, and maintenance of clinical standards.
• Provide clinical leadership, mentorship and training to Clinical Officers and other personnel involved in emergency response and patient care.
• Support emergency preparedness, including major incident planning, drills and simulation exercises.
• Ensure the operational readiness of emergency response vehicles, ALS equipment, medications and other emergency medical resources.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and practise in accordance with applicable clinical standards, professional requirements and company policies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Complete required clinical, operational and quality audits, identify areas requiring improvement, and ensure agreed corrective actions are appropriately followed up.
• Monitor medication, consumable and equipment stock levels and ensure orders are prepared and submitted timeously to maintain operational readiness.
• Maintain oversight of emergency response vehicles and clinical equipment to ensure they are appropriately stocked, functional and ready for use.
• Maintain and monitor relevant operational dashboards, electronic health records and reporting systems, ensuring information is accurate, complete and kept up to date.
• Ensure clinical documentation, registers and operational records are completed accurately and in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure clinical incidents and adverse events are appropriately reported, reviewed and escalated in accordance with company procedures, and contribute to follow-up actions where required.
• Participate in routine service reporting and review of clinical and operational performance, and support the implementation of identified improvements.
• Perform other duties within the scope of the role as reasonably required by management.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential requirements
• A recognised degree-level qualification in Emergency Medical Care / Advanced Life Support, or an equivalent professional qualification that permits practice at an Advanced Life Support level.
• Current professional registration and valid practising licence/certificate with the relevant health professions regulatory authority in the country of current or most recent clinical practice.
• Must meet the requirements for, or be eligible for registration with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
• Must be current with applicable Advanced Life Support Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) and able to provide evidence of relevant clinical updates and continuing professional development.
• Current recognised BLS, advanced trauma and paediatric emergency-care certification, such as ITLS/PHTLS and PALS, or recognised equivalents.
• Minimum five years' post-qualification experience practising at an Advanced Life Support level.
• Previous experience in a supervisory, team-lead or managerial role within an emergency medical or clinical service.
• Demonstrated experience in clinical governance, including clinical audit, quality improvement, incident review and implementation of clinical standards and protocols.
• Experience in clinical training, mentorship and competency development of healthcare or emergency-response personnel.
• Valid driver's licence.
Highly desirable
• Previous experience within a mining, industrial, remote-site or resource-limited environment.
• Experience supporting exploration or other remote operations, including topside medical support, remote clinical advice and medical evacuation coordination.
• Experience providing or overseeing primary healthcare services in addition to emergency medical care.
