Job summary
We are seeking a dynamic, highly motivated Band 8a Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to join our well-established General Surgery team.
The service comprises a Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) and two General Surgical inpatient wards, caring for elective and emergency surgical patients. Working closely with colleagues across the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC), the team provides timely assessment, effective clinical decision-making and appropriate management pathways.
The successful candidate will be an autonomous practitioner with excellent clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning and decision-making skills, committed to delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centred care within a multidisciplinary environment.
You will join a supportive team comprising five qualified ACPs and one Trainee ACP from nursing and paramedic backgrounds. Working alongside Foundation Year 1 and Senior House Officer colleagues, you will contribute to the assessment and management of surgical patients across the service.
We have a strong track record of supporting ACP development through clinical supervision and educational opportunities. ACPs contribute to service development, quality improvement, teaching, audit and research, with opportunities to develop specialist interests and advanced procedural skills relevant to General Surgery.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will practise autonomously as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner within General Surgery, providing expert, patient-centred care across the surgical pathway. Working within an agreed scope of practice, the ACP will undertake advanced clinical assessment, examination, investigation, diagnosis, treatment planning, referral and discharge of patients with acute and elective surgical conditions.
Key responsibilities include:
Undertaking comprehensive assessment, clerking, diagnosis and management of surgical patients.
Requesting, interpreting and acting on appropriate investigations.
Developing management plans, including admission, treatment, referral and discharge.
Prescribing independently within scope of practice and relevant policies.
Participating in ward rounds, discussions and surgical assessment services.
Working collaboratively with Consultants, doctors, nurses, ACPs and allied health professionals.
Providing expert clinical advice and support to colleagues
Maintaining accurate and contemporaneous records.
Exercising professional autonomy, accountability and clinical judgement when managing complex presentations.
Recognising deterioration and escalating care appropriately.
Supporting patient flow and effective communication across the surgical pathway.
The post holder will also contribute to leadership, education, quality improvement, audit and research, supporting service development and the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice.
