About this role
Join the next generation of European quantum technology researchers.
DTU Electro invites applications for a fully funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Candidate position, within the Horizon Europe Doctoral Network QUEST – Quantum Electrodynamics with Silicon Nanotechnology.
QUEST brings together leading European universities, research institutes, and innovative companies to advance quantum technologies through silicon nanotechnology. Within this network, you will be one of 15 doctoral candidates working on complementary research projects spanning semiconductor materials, nanofabrication, quantum photonics, quantum electrodynamics, advanced characterization, and theoretical modeling.
For this PhD project, we are looking for a bright student to join the Photonic Nanotechnology group at DTU Electro and work on theory, design, and modeling of novel optical cavities with deep subwavelength confinement and unprecedented light-matter interactions. Using numerical simulations and modal expansions of electromagnetic fields, you will design silicon nanostructures for practical quantum optics experiments with given specifications needed for fabrication and subsequent measurements by the project partners. Based on the theory, you will set up appropriate models to enable interpretation of the experimental results. We want to investigate light-matter interaction between fields in optical cavities and fast electrons for design and interpretation of transmission electron microscope-experiments as well as quantum optics of cavities with deep subwavelength confinement and embedded colorcenters.
As a member of QUEST and of the Photonic Nanotechnology group, you will work closely with colleagues specializing in nanofabrication and optical experiments, and we emphasize a strong collaboration between theory and experiment. The PhD project takes place at DTU Electro with two secondments of minimum three months each at Humboldt University in Berlin (DE) and the Max Planck Institute in Göttingen (DE).
Responsibilities and tasks
You will be expected to primarily contribute to the theory, design, and modelling of optical properties of silicon nanostructures. Depending on interest, you may also contribute to specific measurements in the optical laboratories.
As part of the Danish PhD program, you will follow several PhD courses and take part in the teaching as a teaching assistant. For the two secondments, you are expected to relocate to the project partners. There will also be regular meetings with the other 14 PhD students and partners in the doctoral network, including two training schools and two workshops.
Qualifications
We are looking for an engineer or physicist with excellent academic records and who has ideally already demonstrated scientific achievements. We are interested in working with candidates who are highly motivated, reliable, self-driven, and have demonstrated during their Master thesis excellence in theoretical physics, electromagnetics, numerical modelling, or quantum optics. Other qualities of the successful candidate:
• Is academically curious and thinks deeply and creatively • Takes responsibility for the progress and quality of the project. • Communicates well in both written and spoken English • Is empathetic and enjoys working with others from diverse backgrounds.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Candidates with a strong background in photonics, quantum optics, laser physics and numerical techniques are preferred. Only candidates with a GPA belonging to the very top can expect to be called for interview.
Due to the mobility rules of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie program, you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education.
Assessment
Assessment of the candidates will be carried out by Senior Researcher Philip Trøst Kristensen and Professor Søren Stobbe.
