About this role

Vehicle Fleet Technician/Vehicle Mechanic Transportation Department SY 2026-2027 Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia is accepting applications for a Vehicle Mechanic in the Transportation Department. The Vehicle Fleet Technician/Vehicle Mechanic will assist the Shop Foreman in maintaining the school board fleet of school buses and other motor vehicles and equipment in a state of operating efficiency for the safety of our students and employees, and to prevent interruptions to the educational programs to the extent possible. Special care is to be given to vehicle components that could produce a life-threatening situation if damaged and not repaired. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs work assignments as directed by the shop foreman to ensure the fleet is kept in good repair

• Takes care of road calls when assigned, ensuring problems are handled professionally for the safety and well-being of students and/or employees

• Ensures that all school buses serviced are maintained to the highest possible safety standards to meet or exceed State Board of Education regulations as established in the “Preventative Maintenance Manual for Virginia School Buses”

• Ensures all school board owned vehicles and other equipment is serviced to maintain the highest possible safety standards necessary to ensure the safety and well being of employees using them

• Documents all work performed and parts used on the appropriate work order

• Assists other technicians when necessary

• Keeps updated on the newest technology and parts pertaining to the vehicles serviced

• Available as agreed upon with the shop foreman to work a 40 hour work week during the hours of operation which are 6:00 am until 5:00 pm, and to assist with after-hour emergencies as needed when possible

• Drives school bus routes as a substitute bus driver as needed

• Performs other duties as needed and/or assigned by the Superintendent, Director/Supervisor/Shop Foreman to ensure the highest quality transportation is provided for students and staff at all times

Minimum Qualifications:

• Licensure/Certifications:

• Valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with air brakes required. License must have S and P endorsements or technician must be able to obtain them immediately upon hire.

• Satisfactory DMV Driving Record

• Valid Virginia State Inspector license or be eligible to obtain one immediately upon hire.

• ASE School Bus Technician certification preferred

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

• Mechanic/Technician background and experience on diesel and gasoline engines necessary to maintain school buses, vehicles such as trucks, vans, and cars, and other miscellaneous equipment such as tractors, lawn tractors and mowers, snow blowers, weed eaters, etc.

• Computer knowledge required including Microsoft Office programs and internet. Experience using vehicle fleet maintenance programs and school bus engine/chassis diagnostic software highly desirable

• Knowledge and experience in vehicle service procedures and parts inventory practices

• Interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with school personnel, government agencies, and members of the community

• Ability to quickly and calmly respond to emergency situations

• Background in Virginia State Inspection practices

• Be proficient in the use of tools and equipment necessary to maintain school buses, vehicles and other equipment

• Effective verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to maintain an unquestionable degree of confidentiality

• Ability to multi-task, work with interruptions, and work under pressure

• Ability to be dependable and punctual

Desirable:

• Technical school or diesel college degree preferred

• Class A commercial drivers license with tow truck experience for fleet vehicles preferred
