MAINTENANCE WORKER 2-GROUNDS Maintenance and Custodial Services Department Purpose: The Maintenance Worker 2 – Grounds performs skilled and semi-skilled grounds management across Beaverton School District facilities, athletic venues, and surrounding land. Building on the Level I foundation, this position operates heavy equipment, handles specialized turf and field management, performs minor system repairs, and provides technical guidance to entry-level grounds personnel. Essential Job Responsibilities
• Advanced Turf & Field Management: Prepare and maintain high-school and community athletic fields (baseball, softball, football, soccer, track), including turf aeration, overseeding, striping, line marking, and field drag/grade operations.
• Heavy Equipment Operation: Safely operate heavy commercial grounds machinery, including tractors, backhoes, utility vehicles, large-deck gang mowers, and attachments.
• Irrigation Systems Care: Inspect, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance or light repairs on automated underground irrigation systems (e.g., repairing pipe leaks, replacing broken sprinkler heads, adjusting backflow valves).
• Work Order & Project Leadership: Diagnose grounds maintenance issues and complete assigned electronic work orders. Assist in planning seasonal projects (e.g., bark dust application, tree removal, drainage improvements) and lead small work crews or Level I staff on specific assignments.
• Pest & Vegetation Management: Identify weed, disease, and insect pressures in turf and plantings; apply approved fertilizers, pre-emergents, or treatments following district policies and environmental guidelines.
• Emergency & Seasonal Readiness: Assist in emergency response efforts, including hazard tree clearance, storm cleanup, drainage clearance, and snow/ice control operations.
Minimum Qualifications
• Education & Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of progressive experience in commercial groundskeeping, athletic field maintenance, or landscape construction.
• Licensing & Certification: Valid Oregon driver's license with a clean driving record. Public Pesticide Applicator License (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire) preferred.
• Skills: Proficient in operating heavy power equipment; working knowledge of turf grass management, athletic field specifications, and basic irrigation plumbing.
• Clearance: Ability to pass a physical exam and background check.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands Requires heavy physical labor, including lifting up to 50+ lbs, climbing, digging, and working outdoors in extreme temperatures or inclement weather.
