Job summary

At Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust, we are looking to recruit for the position of a Senior Business Partner-Research & Development to join our staff BANK as Band 8C.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will :

1.Act as an expert within the highly specialised area of R&D finance, advising and resolving queries from other directorates on R&D finance accounting and liaising with Finance Directors and Head of Finance on complex matters relating to accounting for research funding.

2.Ensure senior managers and directors within R&D and other finance staff within the trust adhere to the complex rules around R&D income and expenditure.

3.Develop and implement financial strategies and R&D Finance Policy for the management and recovery of the trust's R&D income and expenditure.

4.Development of appropriate systems and procedures and overlooking implementation of new initiatives to allow the effective and efficient management and recovery of R&D income.

5.Lead on the development and implementation of policies and SOPs pertaining to the effective and efficient management all aspects of research finance.

6.Be responsible for the continuous development and improvement of the R&D finance processes, reporting , policies and SOPs.

7.Overlooking all financial reporting to the R&D directorate and Central Finance Head of Corporate Finance, and Finance Directors and CFO.

8.Lead the financial input into the production of the R&D annual/quarterly returns for all NIHR funding sources and to coordinate other mandated reporting of the trust's R&D finance performance in line with external deadlines.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :-

Responsibility for Management & Leadership

1.To lead the recruitment, induction, training and development of the research and development (R&D) finance team

2.To provide professional leadership for the R&D finance team and as line manager to effectively plan and manage the workload of direct reports to ensure the operational needs of R&D and strategic needs of the trust are met.

3.To provide operational management, set objectives and priorities and to motivate and appraise staff.

4.Proactively develop the R&D finance team through on-the-job training, professional academic studies and other approaches such as ensuring all team members have a meaningful appraisal/personal development plan, mentoring and opportunities for career development as appropriate.

5.To provide financial leadership and present highly complex financial information to the senior staff within the R&D function.

Responsibility for Information Management

1.To develop and maintain integrated financial performance reports including analysis of trends and forecasts.

2.To ensure appropriate variance analysis and forecasts are produced to facilitate monthly review of financial performance by the director of R&D, clinical R&D theme directors and head of corporate finance within deadlines.

3.To coordinate the provision of financial reports and analysis and to support the Head of Finance, Director of R&D and clinical R&D theme directors in the production of financial reports to the Executive Team, Trust Board, trust regulators and research funders.

4.To manage the provision of financial management information, analysis and advice to the directors and senior managers within the R&D function.

5.To work collaboratively to improve the effectiveness of accounting systems where pertaining to the management and recovery of R&D income, working closely with the R&D director and head and deputy head of corporate finance.

Financial Responsibilities

1.To provide professional and expert financial guidance to R&D directors, senior managers and budget holders as required.

2.To lead on the budget setting process for the entire R&D directorate ensuring this is achieved within agreed timescales and is complete, accurate and relevant.

3.Leading onthe processes for the R&D finance teams input to the Trusts financial forecast, business planning, CIP monitoring and budgeting cycles.

4.To lead on all internal and external directorate budgetary reporting including but not limited to: reporting to budget holders, themes/directorates, the trust board, NIHR/CRN NT and the DHSC. The post holder will be expected to review the reporting needs of R&D on a regular basis and undertake work as necessary to meet new or changing information needs.

5.To be responsible for managing the Trusts monthly budget reporting cycle through the General Ledger, ensuring that accurate and timely budgetary control information is circulated to all budget holders in line with agreed reporting deadlines.

Experience Essential

Post qualification analytical financial management experience Successful experience of managing teams including experience of leading management accounting Teams Experience of managing budget setting in large and highly complex Organisations Experience of producing financial monitoring reports to Senior Management/Directors for large and highly complex organisation Experienced in use of systems (initially Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Word) to prepare and present accurate, clear information and to identify what can be produced from other financial systems Knowledge and experience of financial systems Experience in design of new processes and implementation of these processes in line with IFRS Experience of Research Finance and managing various streams of funding Excellent experience of reconciliation and improvements to maintaining transparency in the ledger

Experience of managing and developing financial management teams NHS financial management experience Acute hospital financial management experience Experience of writing official documents like policies and SOPs for wider audience Experience of presenting internally and externally highly complex topics and ability to explain to non-finance professionals. Education & Professional Qualifications Essential

Professional qualification in accountancy (CIMA, ACA, CIPFA, ACCA) Masters Degree or equivalent experience Expert knowledge gained through specialist training or experience Evidence of maintaining and developing technical accounting expertise and of staying up to date with current accounting rules since qualification
