Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant Upper GI Surgeon to join our surgical team in Cornwall.
We are seeking a surgeon with a strong interest and experience in Upper GI surgery, ideally with a specialist interest in bariatric surgery and experience in robotic-assisted surgery. The successful candidate will join a supportive multidisciplinary team and contribute to the continued development of high-quality, patient-centred surgical services across Cornwall.
About you
We are looking for a Consultant who is:
Fully trained in Upper GI surgery and eligible for appointment at Consultant level. Experienced in complex Upper GI surgery. Ideally experienced in, or with a strong interest in, bariatric surgery. Experienced in robotic surgery, or with demonstrable commitment to developing their robotic skills. A strong team player with excellent communication and leadership skills. Committed to clinical excellence, teaching, research and continuous service improvement.
Main duties of the job
The role
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:
Deliver a high-quality elective and emergency Upper GI surgical service. Develop and expand their specialist interest in bariatric surgery. Undertake and develop robotic-assisted surgical procedures as part of our evolving minimally invasive surgery programme. Work closely with gastroenterology, oncology, radiology, anaesthetics, dietetics and other members of the multidisciplinary team. Contribute to service development, clinical governance, teaching and training. Support the continued development of specialist Upper GI and bariatric pathways across Cornwall. We are particularly interested in candidates who can bring robotic surgical expertise and enthusiasm for developing innovative, minimally invasive approaches to patient care.

Qualifications Essential
Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining this FRCS (Gen Surg) or qualification of equivalent level
Desirable
Fellowship in Upper GI +/- Bariatric Surgery Additional Research, teaching or management qualifications Experience in complex abdominal wall reconstruction
Academic/Research Skills Essential
Teaching (Medical students, peers, MDT) Experienced in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements Evidence of participation in risk management Evidence of completed audit cycles or change management project
