Job summary
The Clinical Lead for Community Surgery Incision/Excision is responsible for providing clinical leadership and oversight of a community-based minor surgery service for eligible adult patients registered with GP practices in Barking and Dagenham. The role involves assessing referrals for suitability, undertaking incision and excision procedures where required, maintaining high standards of clinical governance, and ensuring appropriate documentation, audit and follow-up.
The postholder will also support service quality and performance through self-audit and peer audit, monitoring patient safety and outcomes, contributing to monthly reporting, and ensuring that all interventions comply with the relevant Minor Surgery DES requirements.

The role includes assessing referrals, carrying out incision and excision procedures, ensuring appropriate consent and documentation, completing audits, and maintaining compliance with the Minor Surgery DES specification. The postholder will also contribute to patient safety, service performance, reporting and continuous quality improvement.

Experience Essential
A minimum of two years experience carrying out incision and excision procedures, including associated clinical audits.
Qualifications Essential
Please refer to the main Person Specification for the full requirements of the role. In addition, applicants must have: Full registration with the GMC. MRCGP, RCGP or an equivalent recognised qualification. Entry on the Performers List. Appropriate surgical training, gained through previous experience in general surgery or a relevant postgraduate qualification. This may include a Certificate of Competence in Minor Surgery from a Vocational Training Scheme, a higher degree or diploma in a surgical specialty, or evidence of completing an approved minor surgery training course.
Service-Specific Duties: Essential
The General Practitioner will be responsible for assessing patients either face to face or remotely, determining their suitability for treatment and carrying out the required procedure where appropriate. The role also includes completing self-audits and contributing to the audit of other clinicians. The postholder will be expected to: Ensure all clinical interventions comply with the relevant DES specification. Maintain competency by completing an accredited Incision and Excision course every three years, in line with DES requirements. Deliver service-specific clinical interventions safely and effectively. Ensure appropriate patient consent is obtained and all clinical documentation is completed accurately. Support the management of stock, consumables and specialist equipment required for procedures. Manage complex cases appropriately where required.
