Assistant Professor in Health Communication
Position Description: The Department of Communication Studies in the College of Media and Communication at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor whose primary focus is on health communication within the communication studies discipline, with a secondary focus on interpersonal, intercultural, group, rhetorical, or technology communication to begin September 1, 2027 (with an on-duty report date in mid-August).

About the College: The College of Media & Communication (CoMC) (http://www.depts.ttu.edu/comc/) at Texas Tech University serves approximately 2,400 students across its six undergraduate- and five graduate-degree programs. CoMC offers a student-centered learning environment with high standards for teaching and engaged learning, while benefiting from the resources of an R1 research university. College metrics for undergraduate student retention and graduation rates are near the top at Texas Tech across many categories, and CoMC graduate-student enrollment is at record-high levels.
In addition to traditional spaces for offices, classrooms, and computer labs, the College’s 192,000-sf building includes an esports lab, student-run PR agency suite, a commercial-range FM radio station, 12,700 square feet for student organizations and graduate-student offices, and several multimedia production spaces equipped with industry-grade equipment and software. At 13,000 square feet within the building, the CoMC Center for Communication Research (CCR) is the country's premier academic research facility for the study of communication, cognitive and affective processing of information, and media effects. The CCR’s labs and equipment can be used for audience testing, content analysis, experimental surveys, eye-tracking, focus groups, psychophysiological measurements, and robotics/AI integration. The College has rebuilt its research infrastructure and made strategic hires resulting in all-time highs in external funding applications and grant awards. Further strengthening the University’s stable budget environment, state taxpayers in 2023 approved a $3.9 billion research endowment, the Texas University Fund (TUF), that brings $44 million annually to Texas Tech to support faculty research and scholarly/creative activities. Interdisciplinary research strengths across the College’s departments include computational communication, sports communication/media, organizational/corporate communication, and crisis/risk/health communication. Faculty affiliates of the Thomas Jay Harris Institute for Hispanic & International Communication engage in teaching, research and community outreach related to Hispanic and international/intercultural communication (comc.ttu.edu/research/hihic). About the Department/School/Area: The Department of Communication Studies (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/comc/programs/commstudies/) (COMS) is home to more than 400 undergraduate majors and 35+ graduate majors in our MA program. COMS faculty and student interests span interpersonal, intercultural, and organizational communication, as well as rhetoric and public affairs, helping students develop communication skills that enhance their personal, professional, and public lives.
Major/Essential Functions: In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a dynamic student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of research, teaching, and service.
As a faculty member in the Department of Communication Studies, you will be expected to: • Develop and sustain an active, nationally visible research agenda that aligns with and contributes to Texas Tech University’s strategic research priorities, including interdisciplinary, collaborative, and/or community-engaged scholarship addressing contemporary communication issues. • Pursue external funding opportunities to support research, creative activity, and program development in areas relevant to the university’s strategic initiatives. • Teach and mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate levels using evidence-based and student-centered pedagogical practices that support student success. • Contribute to the department’s teaching mission by offering courses in health communication and closely related courses (e.g., interpersonal, group, family, technology, etc.). We would also appreciate hearing the applicant's proposed special topic courses for both undergraduate and graduate levels. • Engage in service activities at the departmental, college, university, and professional level, including participation in shared governance, professional organizations, and initiatives that advance the discipline. • Participate in outreach and community engagement efforts that translate communication research and expertise into meaningful impact for local, regional, and global communities, consistent with TTU’s commitment to transforming lives through engaged scholarship. • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to foster innovative research, teaching, and outreach initiatives that enhance visibility and impact within the university and beyond.
The appointment comprises 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. Tenure track faculty in the department have a 2-2 teaching load with the possibility for summer teaching, including additional compensation, depending on institutional needs and enrollment demand.
Faculty Qualifications: • A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Communication or an equivalent terminal degree in a closely related field is required. ABD applicants must complete their degree before the official start date. • A clear research agenda in health communication. All research methodologies will be considered. • Evidence of acceptance of conference papers and/or peer-reviewed publications in Communication or a closely related discipline. • A record of receiving internal or external funding for research, teaching, travel, or service. • Evidence of instruction in academic, healthcare, organizational, or community settings. • Evidence of service to the discipline, academy, and/or community.
Preferred Qualifications: • A record of scholarly publication in health communication. • A record of research in interpersonal, intercultural, group, rhetorical, or technology communication. • A record of securing external funding for health communication research. • Evidence of interdisciplinary approaches or community-engaged scholarship, especially as they address TTU and Texas workforce priorities. • Two years of teaching experience at the college level. • Experience teaching a variety of modalities. • Experience mentoring graduate students, including as a peer mentor. • An ability to use student-centered pedagogies to address current workplace demands. • A developing professional identity in health communication, as demonstrated through participation in KCHC, DCHC, ICCH, Aspen Engaged, NCA, and/or ICA. • Experience with community engagement and outreach initiatives.
