What are we looking for
Reporting to the Head of QHSE, the Environmental Manager will be responsible for overseeing ITM’s environmental management systems, regulatory compliance and accreditation programmes. Working across the business, this role will collaborate with colleagues in Research and Development, Production, Manufacturing, Facilities Management, Procurement, Finance and Sales, while maintaining good working relationships with waste management contractors, regulators and industry bodies.
You will lead the implementation of environmental and sustainability programme and initiatives across the business in meeting regulatory, customer and ISO 14001 requirements, and driving a culture of continuous improvement.
Key accountabilities for the role include:
• Maintaining and enhancing the Environmental Management System (EMS).
• Coordinating environmental accreditation schemes and associated internal and external audits.
• Monitoring environmental performance and ensuring ongoing compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirements.
• Coordinating statutory reports and communications with regulatory bodies.
• Supporting and project managing environmental surveys, consent applications and renewals.
• Identify and deliver projects to improve the environmental footprint, reduce waste and improve awareness and interaction with key environmental initiative.
Responsibilities
Environmental Management
• Collecting and analysing environmental data to meet reporting obligations, monitor performance and inform improvement opportunities to help reduce environmental impact, including emissions, carbon footprint and waste.
• Create dashboard to present and report on the above in collaboration with the Head of QHSE
• Provide advice on all aspects of Environmental requirements.
• Hold monthly HSE Review Meetings with Operations Teams and report on department performance.
• Lead risk-based and evidence-led programmes and initiatives to improve environmental performance.
• Own the aspects and impacts register and legal register.
• Conduct environmental impact assessments and report on findings and recommendations.
• Manage the Environmental Improvement Plan.
• Manage and improve all content on the Environmental Hub staged within the HSE Hub.
• Work with Procurement to monitor and improve the environmental performance of the supply chain.
• Create and deliver environmental training packages to benefit employees and the business.
• Develop, review and improve environmental processes, procedures and policies within the business in line with ISO requirements.
• Spearhead internal and external environmental audits.
• Ensure legal compliance regarding environmental permitting, including those of emissions and trade effluent, by liaising with operations and the wider HSE Team. Audit the performance of the organisation against these permit requirements.
• Compile and save all legal correspondence and documentation in line with business and statutory requirements.
• Manage ESG and ISO 14001 compliance.
• Relay key environmental information when requested or needed.
• Promote and raise awareness at all levels of the organisation on environmental and sustainability performance and the impact of emerging environmental issues.
• Coordinate all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation and renewable energy.
• Work on future products/ facilities at design stage to ensure the “green” elements/ prospects are realised.
• Liaise with relevant bodies such as the environmental agency, local authorities, and regulatory bodies.
• Lead on sustainable procurement for goods and services.
Health & Safety
Collaborate with the H&S Manager to:
• Develop and maintain site-specific health and safety policies and procedures.
• Conduct risk assessments and implement control measures.
• Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis.
• Monitor and report on health and safety performance using KPIs.
• Deliver training and toolbox talks to staff and contractors.
• Ensure compliance with H&S legislation (e.g. HSE Regulations, RIDDOR).
• Liaise with regulatory bodies and ensure timely reporting of incidents.
About You
Knowledge and Experience
• NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent in Occupational Health & Safety
• Degree in Environmental Science, Safety Management or related field (preferred)
• Proven experience in an environmental, compliance or sustainability role in manufacturing settings
• A strong understanding of environmental legislation, consenting processes, regulatory, and ISO 14001 requirements relevant to manufacturing operations (e.g. gas emissions, discharge effluents)
• Experience managing environmental audits, accreditation schemes and compliance programmes
• Experience in hazardous waste collection management
• Strong project management, organisational and problem-solving skills
• A proactive approach, with a commitment to continuous improvement and environmental best practice
• Previous manufacturing experience is essential. Applications from candidates without direct manufacturing or industrial environment industry experience are unlikely to be considered
