About this role
Our mission is to be the world’s most valued gold and copper mining business. We are committed to partnering with our host countries and communities to transform their natural resources into tangible benefits and mutual prosperity.
Barrick is a leading global mining, exploration and development company. With one of the largest portfolios of world-class and life-long gold and copper assets in the industry - including six of the world's Tier One gold mines - Barrick's operations an projects span 18 countries and five continents. Barrick is also the largest gold producer in the United States. We create real, long-term value for all stakeholders through responsible mining, strong partnerships, and a disciplined approach to growth. Barrick shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "B" and on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol "ABX".
Senior Long Term Planning Engineer Position Description The Kibali Gold Mine Team are seeking to recruit a Senior Long Term Planning Engineer to lead the development, optimisation, and governance of integrated underground Life-of-Mine plans that support safe, practical, and value-driven mining outcomes. You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets and with our teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner towards achieving targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures. Duties & Responsibilities Strategic Mine Planning
• Lead the development, review, and optimisation of integrated underground Life-of-Mine plans, ensuring alignment with reserve models, production targets, capital requirements, and business planning assumptions. • Integrate resource and reserve models with stope designs to generate reliable long-term production forecasts, including ore tonnes, grade profiles, development meters, material movement, and infrastructure timing. • Optimise stope sequencing, development layouts, infrastructure placement, and orebody extraction strategies to maximise long-term value, production reliability, resource recovery, and capital efficiency. • Conduct scenario planning, trade-off studies, and sensitivity analyses to evaluate alternative mining strategies, production profiles, economic outcomes, and key risks or constraints. • Define and validate key planning assumptions, including mining rates, dilution, recovery, cut-off grades, sequencing constraints, ventilation capacity, backfill requirements, and operational dependencies. Mine Design & Scheduling
• Generate long-term stope designs, access development layouts, ventilation and services corridors, and infrastructure schedules using appropriate mine planning software, preferably Deswik. • Coordinate stope and infrastructure design with short-term, medium-term, geology, geotechnical, ventilation, projects, and operations teams to ensure alignment across planning horizons. • Monitor actual versus planned performance and support reconciliation between the LOM plan, budget, medium-term plan, and operational outcomes. • Ensure all mine designs and schedules are practical, executable, and compliant with safety, statutory, ground control, ventilation, emergency egress, and site planning standards. Planning Governance & Reporting
• Support annual business planning, reserve review processes, budget cycles, and technical governance requirements through accurate long-term schedules, reports, and planning inputs. • Prepare clear LOM planning reports, production schedules, material movement forecasts, development profiles, grade forecasts, and capital infrastructure timing inputs for management review. • Maintain and improve mine planning standards, methodologies, assumptions, and review processes to support consistent, transparent, and auditable planning outputs. Collaboration & Communication
• Liaise with geology, geotechnical, ventilation, projects, short-term planning, medium-term planning, and operational teams to incorporate key inputs into practical and executable mine plans. • Present planning outcomes, risks, opportunities, and scenario analyses to management and stakeholders, including clear justification of design and schedule decisions. • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to planning engineers and contribute to the ongoing development of planning capability within the technical services team. Project & Cost Inputs
• Provide long-range production, operating cost, development, and capital inputs for budgeting, forecasting, and business planning processes. • Identify and sequence underground infrastructure requirements, including ventilation, dewatering, electrical reticulation, backfill, access, and material handling systems aligned with long-term mining strategies. • Support capital planning, project evaluation, and strategic initiatives related to mine development, infrastructure, paste or backfill systems, mining method optimisation, and expansion opportunities. Qualification Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering. • Professional registration will be advantageous. Experience and Skills Requirements
• 8–10 years’ experience in underground hard rock mining, with a strong focus on long hole stoping. • Significant exposure to long-term mine planning, scheduling, and strategic mine design. • Demonstrated experience in Life-of-Mine planning, reserve conversion, production forecasting, infrastructure sequencing, and underground mining trade-off studies. • Strong underground mine design, scheduling, and sequencing capability, preferably within mechanised underground operations and long-hole open stoping environments. • Advanced proficiency in Deswik mine planning and scheduling software. • Strong understanding of underground mining economics, cost drivers, capital planning, operational constraints, cut-off grade strategy, dilution, recovery, backfill, ventilation, and value optimisation. • Strong analytical, problem-solving, report writing, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills, with the ability to influence and present technical recommendations at senior management level.
What We Can Offer You
• A comprehensive compensation package including bonuses and site-specific benefits. • The ability to make a difference and lasting impact. • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team. • Opportunities to grow and learn with industry colleagues are endless. • Access to a variety of career opportunities across the organization.
