Assistant Professor of Physics
Position Description: The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month tenure-track, Assistant Professor whose research spans condensed matter physics and quantum information science, beginning September 1, 2027. We seek a theoretical physicist with expertise in quantum information science, including quantum computing. Areas of particular interest include quantum algorithms, quantum simulation, quantum transduction, and quantum sensing. A central expectation of this position is to forge new research connections among quantum research efforts across the university. This position is part of a broader hiring effort to strengthen quantum research at Texas Tech and promote new collaborations across the university. About the College: Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of 15 departments, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. About the Department/School/Area: The Department of Physics & Astronomy has about 20 faculty, with research clusters in astrophysics, condensed matter physics and particle physics, and additional activity in biophysics and physics education research. Major/Essential Functions: In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a dynamic student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.
Faculty Qualifications: • Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field. • A record indicative of the ability to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. • Demonstrate a commitment to serving robust student populations. Experience working with robust student populations and first-generation students in highly desirable. • A strong record of publications and demonstrated success in obtaining extramural funding to support research activities. • Demonstrated interest in service activities to the department, college, and university. Service duties include membership on academic committees determined by the chair, as well as extracurricular activities.
Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: • Three years of postdoctoral research experience • Expertise in one or more key quantum computing platforms • Background in condensed matter and/or atomic molecular and optical (AMO) physics.

Pay Statement: Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan.
