About this role
Software Engineer
Job description: Mid-Level Full Stack Developer - Core Product - Java FocusedAbout the Company Thoriva is an AI product company that delivers intelligent, data-driven solutions to transform government operations. We combine AI solutions, commercial expertise, and complex business logic to address federal, state, and local government agencies’ biggest challenges. Job Summary As a Mid-Level Full Stack Developer, you will build and maintain modern, end-to-end web applications for Thoriva’s AI-enabled enterprise solutions. This role spans front-end engineering, backend services, cloud-native development, accessibility, performance, and secure digital delivery in support of AI-enabled application development for citizen developers. You will work closely with senior engineers, product, data, security, and domain teams to turn well-defined requirements into reliable, secure, and maintainable features across the stack. The ideal candidate has solid hands-on experience building user interfaces and APIs, is comfortable working in an Agile team, and is eager to grow into broader technical ownership. Key Responsibilities
• Develop, test, and maintain full-stack features spanning responsive web interfaces, backend services, APIs, and integration components.
• Implement capabilities for Thoriva’s application development platform, which enables business users, mission operators, and citizen developers to quickly deploy solutions into operations.
• Build reusable React/TypeScript components and screens aligned to the existing design system, along with RESTful API endpoints and Java backend business logic.
• Work with data, AI/ML, product, and design teams to display model outputs, risk scores, confidence ratings, evidence packages, and reviewer actions in the application.
• Follow established patterns for secure data access to sensitive data.
• Implement authentication flows, role-based access, logging, exception handling, and validation under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Build interfaces that meet accessibility (Section 508 / WCAG 2.1 AA), usability, responsiveness, and performance standards — including verified color contrast, keyboard navigation, and both light and dark themes.
• Support integration with PostgreSQL, object storage, caches, message queues, external APIs, identity providers, and AWS services.
• Containerize and ship your work: build and run services with Docker, and deploy to AWS EKS through existing Kubernetes manifests and CI/CD pipelines, with support from senior engineers.
• Use AI coding tools (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor) as part of daily development, and critically review their output before committing it.
• Write and maintain unit and integration tests (Vitest/Jest, JUnit, Playwright), and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and release activities.
• Create and update technical documentation, API specifications, and implementation notes.
• Troubleshoot defects and production issues, and contribute to performance and reliability improvements.
• Continuously build depth across the stack with mentorship from senior engineers and architects.
Required Qualifications
• 3–5 years of experience in full stack, front-end, or backend software engineering, or a closely related role.
• Hands-on experience building web user interfaces and backend services or APIs in a production environment.
• Working proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and a modern front-end framework — React strongly preferred (Angular/Vue considered).
• Working proficiency in Java (11+) — hands-on experience writing and maintaining Java services is required. Additional backend languages (Node.js, Python, Go, C#) are a plus but do not substitute for Java.
• Working experience with AWS — required. You should be comfortable operating in an AWS environment: deploying containers, reading logs, and working with S3, IAM roles, and managed services. Designing cloud architecture is not expected at this level.
• Daily use of AI coding assistants (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) for implementation, refactoring, tests, and debugging — with the judgment to verify, correct, and reject AI-generated code rather than accept it as-is.
• Experience with relational databases — PostgreSQL preferred (SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle considered) — including writing and tuning queries; NoSQL exposure a plus.
• Solid understanding of REST APIs, HTTP, JSON, authentication and authorization concepts, logging, and error handling.
• Working knowledge of HTML, CSS (Tailwind or similar utility-first CSS), responsive design, and cross-browser behavior.
• Familiarity with Agile delivery, CI/CD practices (GitHub Actions), source control (Git), and automated testing.
• Ability to take well-defined requirements and deliver working, tested features with limited supervision.
• Good communication skills and ability to collaborate with product owners, designers, senior engineers, and QA.
Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with Kubernetes concepts (pods, deployments, services, ConfigMaps), Helm or kustomize, serverless services, API gateways, or message queues.
• Exposure to build tooling and monorepos: Vite, Turborepo, pnpm workspaces; and to Java build tooling: Maven or Gradle.
• Exposure to LLM integration — prompt management, tool/function calling, RAG, model catalogs — plus risk scoring, reviewer queues, audit trails, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
• Experience with design systems and component libraries (shadcn/ui, Radix, MUI), dashboards, or data visualization (ECharts, D3, Recharts).Awareness of secure data handling, PII/PHI, encryption, and compliance requirements.
• Experience working with onshore/offshore delivery teams.
• Familiarity with DevOps and IaC tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, Terraform, or similar tools.
