Canine Enrichment & Care Assistant

Do you enjoy spending time with dogs and supporting their well-being? SPCA Westchester is seeking a compassionate and motivated Canine Enrichment & Care Assistant to join our team. In this role, you will help provide exercise, enrichment, and socialization for the dogs in our care, supporting their physical health, reducing stress, and improving their chances for successful adoption.

Position Overview

The Canine Enrichment & Care Assistant supports the Behavior Team in implementing daily enrichment and activity programs for shelter dogs. This role plays an important part in maintaining the mental and physical well-being of the animals while they await adoption.

Shifts Available

Various (6) and (8) hour shifts available.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

• Walking dogs and providing regular daily exercise

• Facilitating structured enrichment and play activities

• Assisting with supervised dog playgroups

• Supporting basic training and behavior exercises as directed by the Behavior Team

• Providing positive socialization opportunities for dogs of varying temperaments and energy levels

• Safely handling dogs while following shelter safety and handling protocols

Training and guidance on our enrichment protocols and safe dog handling practices will be provided.

Qualifications

Successful candidates are reliable, patient, and comfortable handling dogs of various breeds, sizes, and temperaments.

Helpful experience includes:

• Experience walking dogs professionally (such as with a dog walking service, daycare, boarding facility, veterinary clinic, or animal shelter)

• Comfort handling medium to large dogs who may pull on leash

• The ability to remain calm and attentive when working with animals in a fast-paced environment

• The ability to walk multiple dogs and remain active throughout the workday

• An interest in canine behavior, enrichment, and animal welfare

Shelter or animal welfare experience is preferred but not required.

This position is ideal for individuals with professional dog handling experience who are interested in applying their skills in an animal welfare and behavior-focused environment.
