Locksmith Pay Rate - $25 - $28/hr. Job DescriptionThis journey-level role focuses on the installation, maintenance, service, and repair of a wide range of locking mechanisms, door closers, and exit devices within a university setting. The position also includes the fabrication, issuance, and accountability of keys, ensuring secure and reliable access across campus facilities. Work is periodically spot-checked and inspected to confirm adherence to specifications and accepted standards of the locksmith trade, and involves regular interaction with co-workers, service department staff, and university personnel and students.Responsibilities
• Install, maintain, repair, reset, adjust, and replace a variety of locking mechanisms, door closers, and exit devices to ensure safe and secure operation. • Fabricate keys using both manually and automatically operated key cutting machines, following duplicate patterns to produce accurate copies. • Create keys manually from codes, by observing pin settings in locking devices, and by using impression models to ensure precise key fitting. • Issue and receive keys as needed, maintaining accurate access rosters, card files, receipts, and other records to account for all keys held in the key vault. • Maintain and update files of combinations for combination locking devices to ensure proper access control and documentation. • Open locks that do not have available keys, using prescribed lock-picking procedures and approved lock-picking tools, as authorized by appropriate personnel. • Maintain and repair coin-operated vending devices serviced by the university when required. • Lock and unlock various rooms and offices on campus as directed, ensuring spaces are secured according to university requirements. • Perform or assist with the preparation of cost estimates for work orders, including materials and labor needed for locksmith projects. • Prepare and process material orders, ensuring that tools, equipment, and supplies required for locksmith work are available and properly documented. • Complete reports and maintain detailed records related to locksmith activities, key issuance, repairs, and maintenance performed. • Adhere to established specifications, standards of the trade, and university procedures during all installation, repair, and maintenance tasks. Essential Skills
• Minimum of 4 years of actual experience in the locksmith trade, which may include apprentice or vocational training. • High school diploma or equivalent education, with the possibility of demonstrated skills offsetting formal educational requirements. • Proficient knowledge and skill in the maintenance and use of locksmith tools, equipment, and materials. • Demonstrated ability to install, maintain, repair, reset, adjust, and replace a wide range of locking mechanisms, door closers, and exit devices. • Ability to fabricate keys using manual and automatic key cutting machines and to create keys from codes, pin settings, and impression models. • Strong manual dexterity and physical coordination to perform detailed mechanical work safely and accurately. • Sound judgment and integrity suitable for handling access to keys and opening locks, reflecting appropriate character and trustworthiness. • Valid driver’s license to travel as needed for locksmith duties within the university setting. • Experience maintaining accurate records for key issuance, receipt, and storage in a key vault environment. • Familiarity with maintaining files of combinations for combination locking devices. • Ability to follow prescribed lock-picking procedures and use lock-picking tools responsibly under proper authorization. • Experience maintaining and repairing coin-operated vending devices. • Capability to prepare cost estimates, material orders, and maintenance reports for locksmith projects. • Comfort working in a university environment and interacting with students, faculty, staff, and other service department employees. • Apprentice or vocational training in locksmithing or a closely related trade is beneficial. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kansas City, MO. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
