Job Title: Crane OperatorJob DescriptionThis role operates heavy equipment to move large precast concrete products within the yard and onto trailers for shipment to construction sites. The position focuses on safely handling structural and architectural precast concrete forms used for projects such as parking garages, grocery stores, apartment buildings, and similar facilities. The crane operator ensures that products are moved efficiently, stored properly, and loaded for transport while maintaining equipment safety and coordinating closely with yard laborers. Responsibilities • Operate cranes and other heavy equipment to move precast concrete products throughout the yard for storage and onto trailers for shipping. • Ensure safe operation of assigned equipment at all times, following established safety procedures and guidelines. • Communicate clearly and consistently with yard laborers to move products efficiently and maintain smooth workflow. • Handle precast concrete products carefully to prevent damage during lifting, moving, and loading. • Maintain periodic safety and maintenance logs for all equipment operated, documenting inspections and required service. • Monitor equipment condition regularly and ensure it is kept in good working order, reporting and addressing any issues promptly. • Lead daily huddles with yard laborers each morning to review work plans, safety topics, and priorities for the day. • Review and approve timesheets for yard laborers in accordance with company policies. • Interpret load charts accurately to determine safe lifting capacities and configurations for each pick. • Apply knowledge of machine stability requirements and weight limitations to plan and execute safe lifts. • Perform single and double picks confidently and safely, adapting to different product sizes and weights. • Use all types of rigging and strapping procedures, particularly when picking and loading odd-shaped or oversized pieces. • Follow OSHA regulations and company safety standards related to the operation of heavy equipment and handling of precast products. • Support a team-oriented environment by assisting coworkers as needed and contributing to daily cleaning and housekeeping tasks. • Adhere to all company policies, including strict rules regarding equipment use, safety practices, and cell phone restrictions. Essential Skills • At least 2 years of crane operating experience. • Proven ability to operate cranes and other heavy machinery safely and efficiently. • Ability to interpret load charts and apply them to daily lifting operations. • Strong understanding of stability requirements and weight limitations for the equipment being operated. • Full capability in performing single and double picks with precast concrete products. • Proficiency in using a wide range of rigging and strapping procedures, including for odd-shaped and oversized pieces. • Knowledge of OSHA regulations relevant to the safe operation of heavy equipment. • Basic mechanical ability to understand equipment functions and identify potential issues. • Ability to work well with others and maintain professional conduct at all times in a team environment. • Ability to read a tape measure accurately for measurements related to product handling and placement. • Flexibility to work varying hours within the shift based on job schedules and production needs. • Reliable transportation to and from the worksite. • Ability to operate switcher trucks if assigned. • Ability to comply with all company policies, including drug testing requirements and strict no cell phone use on the floor. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience operating switcher trucks in an industrial or yard environment. • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for operating applicable vehicles and equipment when required. • Experience working in construction, precast concrete, or heavy industrial settings. • Strong communication skills for coordinating with yard laborers and other team members. • Attention to detail in documenting equipment inspections, maintenance logs, and timesheet approvals. • Comfort working in a fast-paced, highly physical environment with continuous movement. • Commitment to safety and adherence to established safety protocols and procedures. Work EnvironmentThe role is based primarily indoors in a busy precast concrete production and yard environment that is active, physical, and fast-paced. The setting resembles a construction environment and can be dirty, hot, and sweaty in the summer, while remaining fairly well temperature controlled in the winter with heating. Employees are moving throughout the day and handling very large concrete panels that require significant physical activity. The culture is strongly team-oriented, with no one considered above or below any job, and managers, supervisors, and owners regularly working on the floor when needed. Everyone is expected to chip in, help others, and participate in daily cleaning and housekeeping. Safety is a major priority, with established protections and procedures throughout the plant. The operation currently runs one main shift, but specific skill sets may start earlier or finish later depending on the job schedule and concrete pour requirements. Typical hours range from approximately 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and employees remain on site until pours are completed to ensure product quality. There is a strict no cell phone policy; phones must be left in vehicles and are not used on the floor during working hours. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Trenton, MI. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
