Job Title: Yard SupervisorJob DescriptionThe Yard Supervisor oversees and coordinates daily yard, dock, trailer, routing, scheduling, fleet, and transportation network activities to ensure the safe and efficient movement of inbound and outbound materials. This role works closely with operations, inventory, carriers, and drivers to plan receiving and shipping schedules, manage yard staging and dock assignments, and maintain accurate transportation data to support timely deliveries and strong service performance. Responsibilities • Supervise and coordinate daily yard, dock, trailer, routing, scheduling, fleet, and transportation network activities to support the safe and efficient movement of inbound and outbound materials. • Coordinate with operations and inventory teams, carriers, drivers, and transportation partners to plan receiving, shipping, delivery schedules, and trailer movement activity. • Manage daily routing, scheduling, yard staging, dock assignments, equipment availability, and fleet operations to support service commitments and on-time deliveries. • Maintain and update accurate trailer, shipment, yard location, routing, shipping, logging, transportation rate, and route information using applicable transportation databases. • Monitor yard flow, trailer dwell time, gate congestion, dock utilization, inbound and outbound order activity, traffic patterns, and performance metrics to identify and resolve operational inefficiencies. • Implement and follow operational policies and procedures that support safety, regulatory compliance, efficiency, equipment control, and consistent transportation execution. • Audit yard and transportation processes to identify inefficiencies, improve workflow, and ensure activities comply with applicable local, state, and federal transportation regulations. • Contact transportation providers to schedule freight pick-up, confirm routing requirements, resolve service issues, and ensure cargo is routed appropriately. • Collect, review, and report data related to shipping rates, freight movement, traffic activity, service performance, and operating trends to support operations and inventory departments. • Partner with warehouse leadership to prioritize loads, manage yard capacity, support labor and equipment planning, and align daily and weekly volume requirements with available dock, trailer, fleet, and driver resources. • Investigate and communicate shipment, inventory, documentation, yard, routing, safety, compliance, or delivery discrepancies to the appropriate stakeholders for timely resolution. • Provide hands-on operational coordination for the daily movement of trailers, freight, equipment, and materials across the yard, dock, and transportation network. Essential Skills • High school education or equivalent (GED). • At least 5 and typically up to 10 years of related experience or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. • Material handling experience, including loading and unloading trucks. • Hands-on experience with RF scanners for inventory and material tracking. • Supervisory experience in a yard, warehouse, or transportation environment. • Operational experience with clamp forklifts, stand-up forklifts, sit-down forklifts, reach trucks, and stand-up reach equipment. • Ability to read and understand company documents, including policies, procedures, and operational reports. • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence clearly and accurately. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers and communicate operational requirements. • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation and reporting. • Basic knowledge of sending and receiving emails for coordination with internal teams and external partners. • Basic knowledge of SAP and Opendoc for accessing and updating transportation and inventory data. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working in a large warehouse or yard environment with complex trailer and freight movement. • Background in general labor and inventory support within a warehouse or distribution setting. • Comfort working with transportation databases and performance metrics to support continuous improvement. • Strong attention to detail when tracking trailers, shipments, yard locations, and routing information. • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and adjust to changing shipping and receiving requirements. • Strong problem-solving skills to identify and resolve yard flow, routing, safety, and compliance issues. • Ability to collaborate effectively with warehouse leadership, operations, inventory teams, and transportation partners. • Commitment to safety practices and adherence to local, state, and federal transportation regulations. Work EnvironmentThe role is based in a large warehouse complex consisting of 52 warehouses spread across 90 acres, providing a dynamic and high-volume yard and dock environment. Work takes place in both indoor and outdoor areas that are non-climate controlled, requiring comfort with varying temperatures and weather conditions. The standard shift runs from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, offering a consistent daytime schedule in an operational setting that utilizes a range of material handling equipment and transportation technologies. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Richmond, VA. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $31.00 - $31.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
