Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Band 7 Paediatric Practice Development Nurse to join our team. This role is ideal for a children's nurse passionate about education, professional development, quality improvement and delivering safe, evidence-based, family-centred care.
The post holder will provide leadership in practice development, working with clinical teams to identify learning needs, enhance workforce capability and support continuous improvement. Acting as a role model, you will use your clinical expertise to influence practice, facilitate learning and embed evidence-based standards.
You will lead education programmes, clinical competencies and learning resources for nurses, healthcare support workers, students and newly qualified staff. Working with multidisciplinary colleagues, you will promote a positive learning culture and support high-quality, compassionate care.
The successful candidate will have significant paediatric experience, strong communication skills and experience in education, practice development or quality improvement, with the ability to influence change and improve patient outcomes. Flexibility is required to support service needs and equitable access to development opportunities including unsociable hours.
Main duties of the job
Lead and support the development of nursing practice across paediatric services. Design, deliver and evaluate education and training programmes. Develop and maintain clinical competencies and learning resources. Support staff development through coaching, teaching and mentorship. Promote evidence-based practice and support implementation of clinical guidelines. Lead and contribute to quality improvement and practice development initiatives. Support clinical teams to identify learning needs and improve standards of care. Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and education partners. Provide flexible education support across all shifts and clinical areas to meet the learning needs of the paediatric workforce.

The Paediatric Practice Development Nurse provides professional leadership and expertise in developing, improving and maintaining high standards of paediatric nursing practice. The role focuses on education, workforce development, quality improvement and the delivery of safe, evidence-based, child- and family-centred care.
The post holder will work collaboratively with clinical teams, education leads and multidisciplinary colleagues to identify learning needs, develop competencies, deliver training and support the professional development of nurses, healthcare support workers, students and newly qualified staff.
Acting as a clinical role model, the post holder will promote a positive learning culture, facilitate evidence-based practice, support service improvements and contribute to improving patient outcomes through effective practice development initiatives.
Main Responsibilities
Provide professional leadership and expert advice in paediatric nursing practice development. Identify learning needs and develop, deliver and evaluate education programmes, training sessions and competency frameworks. Support the induction, development and ongoing education of registered nurses, healthcare support workers, students and newly qualified staff. Promote evidence-based practice, clinical excellence and continuous improvement across paediatric services. Act as a clinical role model, supporting teams to enhance confidence, skills and quality of care. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, clinical leaders and education partners to implement practice changes. Lead and support quality improvement initiatives, audits and service developments to improve patient outcomes. Develop learning resources and support a positive learning culture within the paediatric workforce. Monitor and evaluate the impact of education and practice development activities. Provide flexible support to meet service priorities and workforce development needs.
Person Specification
Qualifications/ Education Essential
Registered Children's Nurse with current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Degree or evidence of study at degree level Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to paediatric practice and clinical education Practice Assessor qualification or equivalent in accordance with NMC Standards.
Desirable
Master's degree in nursing, Education or related subject, or working towards. Quality Improvement or coaching qualification.
Communication Skills Essential
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with children, young people, families and multidisciplinary teams. Ability to present information clearly to a range of audiences. Ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and healthcare professionals. Able to provide constructive feedback, coaching and support to staff. Ability to communicate complex information in an accessible and supportive manner. Demonstrates effective listening and interpersonal skills.
Desirable
Experience of facilitating teaching sessions, presentations or workshops. Experience of communicating and supporting change across clinical teams.
Knowledge and Training Essential
In-depth knowledge of current paediatric nursing practice and standards. Knowledge of evidence-based practice and quality improvement methodologies. Understanding of clinical governance, patient safety and risk management. Knowledge of NMC Code and Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment. Knowledge of safeguarding children legislation and national guidance. Understanding of NHS priorities relating to education, workforce development and quality improvement.
Desirable
Awareness of national paediatric quality standards and benchmarking programmes.
Experience Essential
Significant post-registration experience within acute paediatric services. Experience of recent working at Band 6 level or above. Experience of developing, delivering and evaluating clinical education programmes. Experience of supporting competency-based learning and assessment. Experience of leading practice development, service improvement or quality improvement initiatives. Experience of implementing evidence-based practice and supporting change in clinical practice. Experience of supporting students, newly qualified nurses and registered staff in clinical learning.
Desirable
Previous experience in a Practice Development Nurse, Clinical Educator or Professional Development role.
Planning Skills Essential
Ability to work flexibly to meet the requirements of the service. Ability to plan, organise and prioritise own workload effectively. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines within a busy clinical environment. Able to plan and deliver education, training and practice development activities. Ability to coordinate projects and monitor progress against agreed objectives. Able to anticipate challenges and adjust plans to meet changing service needs.
