Assistant Professor - South or Southeast Asian History
Position Description: The Department of History in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor in the history of Modern South or Southeast Asia to begin September 1, 2027. The area of specialization is open, but we will prioritize candidates working on the post-1800 period who are well suited to our department’s needs. The successful candidate will be expected to publish peer-reviewed research and teach World History survey courses, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise.'

About the College: Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of 15 departments, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The College has more than 10,000 students enrolled representing more than a quarter of the overall Texas Tech University student population while maintaining a 22:1 student to faculty ratio.
About the Department/School/Area: The History Department at Texas Tech is a vibrant and collegial place, home to over 30 faculty members who regularly publish innovative research. We commonly serve more than 5,000 undergraduate students each semester, nearly 200 of whom are majors, with an additional 300 minors. We also have a robust graduate program of around 80 students pursuing MA and PhD degrees. Texas Tech is home to Vietnam Center and Sam Johnson Vietnam Archive, which is the largest non-governmental collection of materials related to the American War in Vietnam and the wider postcolonial wars of Southeast Asia. Our graduates have gone on to careers in education, politics, law and public service of all kinds.
Major/Essential Functions: In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a dynamic student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.
As a faculty member in the Department of History, you will be expected to: • Contribute to the teaching mission of the department • Mentor graduate students • Develop a record of peer-reviewed research and scholarly engagement • Pursue research funding as opportunities allow • Provide service to the department, college and university
Faculty Qualifications: • A completed PhD in South or Southeast Asian history or closely related field, obtained by September 1, 2027 • Established track-record of peer-reviewed research in the field of South or Southeast Asian History • A strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching
