Job summary
Elm Tree are delighted to be recruiting a phlebotomist to join our friendly practice team. The Phlebotomist is an integral member of the patient service: He/she will be responsible for safely and efficiently performing venepuncture on patients requiring blood tests. To contribute to the efficient performance of the clinical team in the provision of services to patients, in accordance with policies and protocols.
Main duties of the job
Undertake the venepuncture procedure effectively and sensitively with respect for the patients welfare, dignity and preferences to a standard fit for laboratory analysis, ensuring minimum distress or discomfort to the patient. Obtain an accurate volume of blood to chemical ratios. Utilisation of appropriate blood bottles dependent upon tests required ensuring all necessary bloods are requested and sampled. Confident in the use and application of IT systems. Good keyboard skills as interaction with a electronic patient record system (SystmOne and ICE) is used to access, view and print patient blood test requests is required. Obtain patients lawful consent to perform an invasive procedure. Maintain Health, Safety and wellbeing of yourself and others. To achieve a high standard of practice using competencies within Phlebotomy. The safe and appropriate use and disposal of equipment and sharps. To liaise and communicate with doctors, nurses and other ward staff. Give patients, guardians and carers appropriate advice regarding the availability of test results. Clean and maintain workstations following venepuncture and comply with Infection Control and Health & Safety policies. Carry out regular stock checks and stock rotation within phlebotomy clinical work areas

Experience Essential
Direct patient care with experience undertaking phlebotomy. Working in a health care setting. Health & Safety and Infection control awareness.

Experience of SystmOne Experience of working within GP practice Experience supporting QOF delivery
Knowledge and skills Essential
Ability to undertake Venepuncture. Good communication skills (written and verbal). Able to work as part of a team. Capable to work independently. Attention to detail to ensure positive patient identification. Knowledge of electronic Patient Record systems, Microsoft word and outlook. Self-motivated, professional outlook and positive attitude. Able to meet the flexible needs of the role and duty rota. Must have the ability to put patients at ease and remain calm in an emergency situation. Ability to work in a pressured environment
Desirable
Confident in own ability to liaise with other staff and patients. Time management skills. Can recognise own personal -development needs. Able to exercise initiative to resolve problems associated within your role.
Qualifications Essential
Venepuncture certification GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths Qualified to NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care
Desirable
Qualified in Phlebotomy Qualified to NVQ level 3
