Medical Director for Place / Directorate
5 New senior medical leadership roles part of NELFTs major investment in clinical leadership
North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) is making a significant and purposeful investment in medical leadership. As part of this, we are excited to introduce new Medical Director roles for Place / Directorate, strengthening medical voice, influence and visibility at every level of the organisation.
5 PAs of protected medical leadership time, with up to 5 PAs clinical practice, recognising leadership as core work, not an add on.
The consultant contract is permanent and the Medical Director role is a 3 year fixed term post with the opportunity to extend with mutual agreement. There are 5 posts, one in Barking & Dagenham, one in Havering, one in Redbridge, one in Waltham Forest and one in Essex.
These are brand new roles, created to ensure that medical leadership is fully embedded in place based and corporate decision making, and that doctors are supported, heard and able to shape the future of care for our communities.
As a Medical Director for Place / Directorate, you will provide visible, inclusive and values led leadership across mental health, community physical health and childrens services within your locality. You will work in close partnership with Integrated Care Directors and senior clinical leaders, while also being a core member of the Chief Medical Officers Leadership Team and the Wider Executive Management Team.

These are brandnew roles, created to ensure that medical leadership is fully embedded in placebased and corporate decisionmaking, and that doctors are supported, heard and able to shape the future of care for our communities.
As a Medical Director for Place / Directorate, you will provide visible, inclusive and valuesled leadership across mental health, community physical health and children’s services within your locality. You will work in close partnership with Integrated Care Directors and senior clinical leaders, while also being a core member of the Chief Medical Officer’s Leadership Team and the Wider Executive Management Team.
The role is designed to enable meaningful leadership impact. Dedicated leadership time is formally recognised within the job plan, alongside the opportunity to continue clinical work within the organisation. This reflects NELFT’s commitment to valuing medical leadership properly and supporting doctors to lead well.
This post is both placebased and Trustwide. You will influence strategy, quality, workforce wellbeing and system working, while remaining rooted in daytoday clinical realities.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
GMC-registered medical practitioner at consultant level (or equivalent)
Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable
Postgraduate management/leadership qualification
Experience Essential
Significant experience of consultant-level practice within the NHS
Proven medical leadership in multi-disciplinary teams.
Record of improving quality, safety and governance
Understanding of ICS and place-based models of care
Desirable
Cross-specialty or cross-sector experience spanning across interfaces of primary care, community services, secondary care, mental health services
