JOB TITLE:

Branding Iron Photographer

JOB PURPOSE:

The Student Photographer produces compelling photographs and video content for the Branding Iron, University of Wyoming’s student newspaper and its digital platforms. This position covers campus news, student life, athletics, events and other stories while working closely with student editors and reporters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Photograph campus news, events, student life, athletics and other assignments for the Branding Iron, the BI Digital and WyoWire. • Shoot and edit video for news stories, interviews, features, social media and digital platforms. • Work with reporters and editors to develop visual content that supports stories. • Select, edit, caption and prepare photographs and video for print, web and social media. • Meet assignment deadlines and respond to breaking-news and time-sensitive coverage needs. • Maintain organized photo and video files and properly identify and archive work. • Follow professional journalistic standards, including accuracy, ethics, copyright and appropriate editing practices. • Participate in required training, staff meetings and other Student Media activities. • Other duties as assigned. • This is not a remote position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current University of Wyoming student in good academic standing. • Demonstrated interest in photography, videography, journalism, communications or visual storytelling. • Basic knowledge of digital photography and/or video production. • Ability to operate a digital camera and/or video camera. • Basic ability to use photo and video editing software. • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments. • Willingness to learn journalistic ethics, visual storytelling techniques and professional newsroom practices. • Must be available for publication deadlines on Sundays and Wednesday nights. • Must be available Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for training.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to shoot quality digital images for newspaper production • Previous photography, videography or journalism experience. • Experience using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro or similar software. • Experience photographing people, events, sports or breaking news. • Experience shooting and editing interviews or news video. • Experience creating content for websites or social media. • Ability to work with both photography and video equipment.

WORK LOCATION:

On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work and perform essential job functions on campus, understanding our location is at 7,220 feet above sea level.
