About this role

Job summary

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a colleague with an interest in Medical Education to develop as a Clinical Educator. This post offers the opportunity to be involved in the exciting field of Simulation, working with all Medical Colleagues in all Specialties, Physician Associates, and our Medical Students from the Three Counties Medical School (TCMS.)

The Simulation Fellow, working in collaboration and under the leadership and guidance of the Simulation Tutors/DME and in collaboration with other Simulation Enthusiasts, will support all Resident Doctors/Staff and Associate Specialists/Locally Employed Doctors/Physician Associates and TCMS Medical Students with the delivery of Simulation-based education, along with supporting NHS England (NHSE) curriculum, Regional and Local Teaching held at GHNHSFT.

Our PGME Strategy is to embed Medical Simulation Training through both in-situ and centre-based Simulation Learning, thus contributing to and improving Patient Care.

Main duties of the job

This role is to support the Education and Simulation training for all Resident Doctors / Staff and Associate Specialists / Locally Employed Doctors / Physicians Associates / Three Counties Medical School. The postholder will be actively engaged in Simulation Course Planning, Delivery, Educational Management, and Educational Governance, supporting the Simulation Tutors and all those Medical Colleagues delivering Simulation.

The Post-Holder is not expected to be an expert in Simulation activities - no prior formal knowledge of educational theory or practice is required, enthusiasm for teaching is though a prerequisite.

To help prepare applications for educational grants to enhance simulation capabilities in the trust, under the supervision of simulation tutors, specialty consultants and the PGME team

Following a training period, the PGME Simulation Fellow will be offered the opportunity to gain an educational qualification to the level of Certificate or above.

Job description Job responsibilities

Represent GHNHSFT at Internal and External Educational and Academic meetings, supporting Simulation Based Education for our Medical/Physician Associates/TCMS Medical Students.

To become integral within the Simulation Networks of Gloucestershire and the South-West.

To network Nationally, within the South-West and Locally, to review and continually be aware of developing Simulation Based Learning developments/initiatives.

To research, observe, and interact with all Medical Simulation Teaching, to identify support that may be required, both within and outside of Medical Curriculums.

Demonstrate Compassionate, Effective Leadership, supporting Simulation Practice and Education at GHNHSFT.

Personal high standards of professionalism at all times, being seen as a role-model for PGME and GHNHSFT

Effectively and sympathetically support the Simulation Faculty with Simulation Based Education being delivered within GHNHSFT.

To work in partnership with the Foundation Programme Directors with the delivery of Curriculum, Foundation Simulation Based Learning Education.

Engage with the Post-Graduate Doctors Forum to support Simulation Based Education within the Education Centres, but also in-situ.

To contribute to all Simulation Reports, Papers, Posters, Funding/Educational Bids, as requested by the Director of Medical Education/Medical Director/NHSE/Universities/other Academic Establishments.

Monitor and evaluate Simulation standards, through teaching session observation, student/learner discussion, formal evaluation.

Work collaboratively with the PGME Team to ensure Simulation Based Learning is included/available, and meeting all Medical Curriculums.

Support Medical Consultants and individuals to identify training, competencies and curriculum requirements that Simulation Based Learning and Technology Enhance Learning can compliment and help support delivery.

Effectively engage staff across the Trust to develop and deliver strategy objectives by working with all Medical Colleagues to assist in effective implementation of new ideas/changes which deliver results.

Provides advise regarding Simulation Training liaising with the Medical Simulation Tutors where and when required.

Uses a range of skills to influence, inspire and encourage all Learners.

Consistently demonstrates a professional, approachable and helpful manner.

Interprets GMC/NETS/NHSE/CQC complex data and statistics gained through quality assurance processes.

Engages all Trust teams in the promotion and marketing of Simulation based and Technology Enhanced Education.

Maintains a Personal Development Portfolio, enhanced by keeping up-to-date with the latest Simulation technologies.

Collaborate with TCMS to ensure Medical Student Placements include Simulation Based Education and Technology Enhance Learning.

Has a willingness to develop knowledge and experience with both existing and new simulation equipment, including through engagement with industry colleagues, to become a local expert so that maximal educational potential can be derived from simulation equipment in the trust.

In collaboration with Trust Simulation enthusiasts, Resuscitation Department and Clinical Leads, collate a Simulation Equipment Library.

Devise a Loan Scheme of equipment that meets the expectations of all Simulation Enthusiasts and planned teaching sessions.

Manage the maintenance and repair of all Simulation Equipment in the Simulation Training Room, working with External Stakeholders to negotiate repair/replacements.

Work with the Trust Procurement Department to review all Contracts for Simulation Equipment.

Be constitutionally aware of the Capital Guidelines for the purchase of new Simulation Equipment, supporting bids for enhanced Trust Simulation equipment

Enthusiastic, creative and flexible in approach to challenges Evidence of formal simulation training (e.g. Simulation Train the Trainers course or equivalent) Relevant postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in healthcare education (e.g. PGCert in Medical Education, ALS instructor status) Certification in BLS/ALS or equivalent clinical skills training Experience of working in Primary and/or Secondary Care Experience of organising, planning or facilitating training sessions for healthcare professionals Experience of completing applications for funding requests or bids Understanding of simulation technologies and their application in medical training Awareness of the simulation-based education requirements across different specialty curriculums for resident doctors Awareness of relevant legislation, local and national policies and procedures affecting simulation-based education Ability to troubleshoot and maintain simulation equipment, with an aptitude for learning technical skills related to simulation technology
