Special Education Teacher (Full-Time, Tenure-Track) Position Title: Special Education Teacher (Pre-K–6) Location: Traphagen School Reports To: Building Principal Position Type: Full-Time, Probationary/Tenure-Track Start Date: Immediately / 2026–2027 School Year Position Summary Traphagen School is seeking a highly qualified, student-centered, and collaborative Special Education Teacher to join our instructional team. The successful candidate will provide high-quality, specially designed instruction to students with disabilities while fostering an inclusive, supportive, and academically rigorous learning environment. This individual will work collaboratively with general education teachers, related service providers, families, and administrators to ensure that every student has equitable access to the curriculum and opportunities to achieve their fullest potential. The ideal candidate is committed to inclusive practices, data-driven instruction, and building strong relationships with students and families. Essential Responsibilities Instruction
• Plan and deliver high-quality, standards-based instruction aligned with the New York State Learning Standards and students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Design and implement specially designed instruction (SDI) to meet the unique academic, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs of students with disabilities.
• Differentiate instruction using evidence-based practices and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
• Utilize research-based instructional strategies and interventions to maximize student achievement.
• Maintain high expectations while fostering independence, confidence, and self-advocacy.
Special Education Compliance
• Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals and objectives.
• Collect and analyze student performance data to measure progress toward IEP goals.
• Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and district special education regulations.
• Prepare progress reports and participate in annual reviews, reevaluations, and Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings.
• Collaborate with families regarding student progress and educational planning.
Collaboration
• Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, teaching assistants, related service providers, school psychologists, counselors, and administrators to support student success.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and professional learning communities.
• Provide consultation and instructional support to general education staff regarding accommodations, modifications, and inclusive instructional practices.
Classroom Environment
• Establish a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement, independence, and respect.
• Implement proactive classroom management strategies and positive behavioral interventions.
• Foster a classroom culture that supports social-emotional learning and positive peer interactions.
Assessment
• Utilize formal and informal assessments to monitor student growth and inform instructional decisions.
• Analyze assessment data to develop targeted interventions and instructional supports.
• Maintain accurate student records and communicate progress with families and instructional teams.
Professional Responsibilities
• Participate in faculty meetings, committee work, and professional development activities.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and information.
• Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, and a commitment to continuous growth.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Building Principal.
Required Qualifications
• New York State Certification in Students with Disabilities (Birth–Grade 2, Grades 1–6, or All Grades) appropriate for the assignment.
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (Master's degree preferred).
• Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, New York State Special Education Regulations, and IEP development.
• Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction and implement evidence-based interventions.
• Strong classroom management and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in Special Education or related field.
• Experience teaching students with diverse learning needs in an elementary setting.
• Experience with co-teaching, integrated co-teaching (ICT), resource room, or self-contained classrooms.
• Experience implementing positive behavioral supports and trauma-informed instructional practices.
• Familiarity with assistive technology and instructional technology tools.
