About this role

Software Developer, Backend

Location: Montreal, Canada / Hybrid

Employment type: Full-time

Company: Montrium inc.

Please note: This is a hybrid Montreal-based role. Candidates must either currently reside within commuting distance of Montreal or be able and willing to relocate prior to their start date.

Montrium is looking for a Software Developer, Backend to help build, evolve, and modernize the backend services behind our Connect platform for life sciences customers.

This is a hands-on role for a developer who enjoys backend engineering, cloud-native development, APIs, integrations, and thoughtful modernization in a regulated SaaS environment where reliability, traceability, security, and quality matter.

What you’ll do

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services, APIs, background jobs, integrations, and data-driven capabilities that support regulated life sciences workflows.

• Build secure, scalable, observable product features using C#, .NET, ASP.NET Core, RESTful APIs, Azure services, messaging patterns, cloud-native design principles, and practical software design patterns.

• Participate early in feature refinement and technical design to clarify requirements, identify edge cases, assess dependencies, and ensure backend solutions are testable and maintainable.

• Improve existing backend services through better reliability, security, performance, scalability, observability, automated testing, documentation, and sustainable engineering practices.

• Diagnose and resolve issues involving APIs, identity, permissions, data access, background processing, integrations, cloud services, logs, metrics, traces, alerts, and diagnostic data.

• Collaborate with developers, architects, product owners, QA, DevOps, CX, and support teams on design discussions, code reviews, troubleshooting, release readiness, controlled promotion, delivery improvements, and the technical evidence needed for traceable delivery.

What we’re looking for

• Three or more years of professional backend or cloud application development experience.

• Strong experience with C#, .NET, ASP.NET Core, RESTful APIs, object-oriented design, and practical software design patterns.

• Practical knowledge of Microsoft Azure services and cloud-native development patterns, including application hosting, storage, messaging, identity, monitoring, and secrets management.

• Experience with distributed systems, asynchronous processing, event-driven design, integration patterns, relational or NoSQL data stores, data modelling, and performance-aware backend development.

• Working knowledge of Git, pull requests, code review, CI/CD practices, unit testing, automated functional testing, and controlled software delivery.

• Familiarity with secure development principles such as least privilege, secrets management, secure API design, and protection of sensitive data.

• Experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting APIs, integrations, background jobs, and data-driven backend behavior in collaboration with QA and product teams.

• A collaborative, curious, and adaptable working style, with strong communication, ownership, time management, comfort working through ambiguity, and the judgment to balance technical details with product, quality, and customer needs.

• College diploma, university degree, or equivalent practical experience in software development, computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a related field, with written and spoken fluency in English and French; other languages are an asset.

Nice to have

• Experience with Azure Functions, Azure Service Bus, Azure Storage, Azure Key Vault, Azure App Configuration, Application Insights, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, infrastructure-as-code, managed identities, API gateways, or automated deployment patterns.

• Interest in or exposure to AI-enabled product features, document intelligence, automation, or emerging cloud services, including backend considerations such as data quality, repeatability, secure integration, observability, and failure handling.

• Familiarity with TypeScript, React, Redux, or other front-end technologies that support collaboration across full-stack teams.

• Experience in a SaaS, pharmaceutical, life sciences, regulated, GxP, or other compliance-oriented product environment.

• Microsoft Azure or developer certification, or willingness to pursue one.

Why join Montrium?

• Work on software that supports regulated life sciences research, compliant digital processes, and meaningful customer outcomes.

• Join a collaborative engineering team that values practical design, shared ownership, sustainable delivery, thoughtful modernization, and visible contribution in a smaller-company environment.

• Use modern productivity and AI-assisted development tools, including GitHub Enterprise Copilot and Microsoft 365 AI capabilities, to support coding, documentation, collaboration, and engineering efficiency.

• Use your backend and Azure expertise to contribute to architectural discussions and grow into broader technical ownership as the platform evolves.

• Benefit from hybrid work flexibility, regular weekly presence at our office in the Old Port of Montreal, and temporary work-from-abroad flexibility for up to six weeks per year, subject to role expectations and collaboration needs.

• Access career development support, coaching, ongoing learning, an annual training stipend, healthcare benefits, paid time off starting at three weeks per year, and a workplace committed to respect, continuous growth, and equal opportunity.
