Job Title: Gate Inspector / Gate ClerkJob DescriptionThe Gate Inspector is responsible for inspecting containers and trailers arriving at and departing from a railroad facility using an automated computerized gate system. This role ensures the accuracy of unit identification, verifies security seals, documents any damage, and completes all required paperwork and data entry. The position requires working both indoors and outdoors, maintaining safety and regulatory compliance, and communicating clearly and professionally with truck drivers and team members. Responsibilities • Inspect all intermodal units, including trailers and containers, for correct unit numbers and visible damage using an automated computerized gate system. • Verify that all security seals are intact on trailers and containers and document any discrepancies immediately. • Oversee and document any damage to arriving or departing units with accuracy and timeliness, ensuring clear communication of findings to the customer. • Clearly outline and communicate all identified damage on appropriate forms and within the computer system, and coordinate information with the direct supervisor. • Apply risk assessment and risk management processes to help identify, evaluate, and manage potential risks within the gate and inspection area. • Maintain a high-quality, safety-focused environment where all performance inspections are conducted safely and remain accident and injury free. • Ensure compliance with HAZMAT and OSHA regulations, including promptly reporting any incidents to supervisory personnel. • Wear and properly use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as safety vest, safety glasses, and protective hard hat, when applicable. • Maintain clear, professional communication with truck drivers while performing inspections, providing directions and updates as needed. • Identify terminal lanes that are not in use and place appropriate cones to notify and safely guide drivers. • Become familiar with the parts and nomenclature of various areas of intermodal units while maintaining a safe distance from moving vehicles. • Complete all required customer paperwork accurately and in a timely manner, including inspection forms and related documentation. • Perform accurate data entry into the automated gate and computer systems to record inspections, damage, and unit information. • Provide courteous customer service to drivers and other stakeholders entering and exiting the facility. • Assist with general gatehouse and office tasks, including filing and organizing inspection documents, during slower periods. Essential Skills • Ability to stand on feet for up to 8 hours at a time. • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions for 8 hours at a time. • Ability to communicate professionally and clearly with drivers entering and exiting the facility. • Very basic computer skills, including the ability to perform data entry and document inspections accurately. • Strong written and verbal communication skills to coordinate with a variety of individuals. • Attention to detail when inspecting, documenting, and verifying unit numbers, damage, and security seals. • Ability to follow safety procedures and comply with HAZMAT and OSHA regulations. • Ability to use an automated computerized gate system after training. • Capability to maintain focus and accuracy in a fast-paced, outdoor operational environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications • No formal certifications or specific education requirements for this position. • Experience with inspection, documentation, and verification tasks is beneficial. • Prior experience in data entry or administrative tasks is helpful. • Customer service experience, particularly in transportation, logistics, or industrial environments, is an advantage. • Familiarity with intermodal units and related terminology is a plus. • Comfort working in a team environment alongside another inspector on the same shift. Work EnvironmentThe role is based at a railroad facility gatehouse and involves both indoor and outdoor work. Gate Inspectors work inside the gatehouse or office to complete paperwork and data entry during slower periods and work outside at the gate to inspect units and interact with drivers during active periods. The position involves standing and working outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods. Inspectors work alongside one other inspector on their shift, fostering a collaborative environment. Inspectors are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including a safety vest, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and a protective hard hat when applicable. There are two openings with shift options that may include 6:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., or 12:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., and new hires receive approximately two weeks of training on an 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. shift. The environment is safety-focused, operationally active, and centered on accurate inspections, clear communication, and regulatory compliance. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of LANGHORNE, PA. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $17.00 - $17.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
