The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices. Role Purpose The Environmental Health & Safety Intern will provide entry-level support to the EHS function at the Keene manufacturing facility. The intern will work with the EHS, Facilities, Maintenance, Engineering, and Operations teams to support environmental compliance, safety programs, risk reduction activities, documentation, and continuous improvement efforts. This role is intended to provide practical manufacturing EHS experience while helping the site maintain compliance, strengthen safety culture, and close program gaps. Key Responsibilities Environmental Compliance Support Assist with hazardous, universal, and non-hazardous waste program activities, including inspections, labeling, recordkeeping, and follow-up on corrective actions. Support satellite accumulation area and central accumulation area walkthroughs, documenting observations and helping drive timely closure of findings. Assist with environmental compliance records and program documentation related to waste, stormwater, SPCC, air permitting, chemical management, and ISO 14001 activities. Help organize compliance evidence, inspection records, training documentation, and audit support materials. Safety Program Support Participate in safety compliance inspections, workplace observations, job hazard reviews, and follow-up on open safety action items. Support incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective or preventive action tracking as needed. Assist with machine safety and equipment risk assessment activities, including guarding reviews, safety control documentation, and Gensuite record updates. Support hot work, contractor safety, lockout/tagout, confined space, and non-routine task planning activities under EHS guidance. Additional Responsibilities EHS Systems, Documentation, and Training Support Assist with the site EHS management system, including Gensuite data entry, action tracking, dashboard support, and compliance calendar updates. Support creation and revision of SOPs, checklists, wall posters, training materials, emergency response documents, and other EHS communications. Help maintain site maps, emergency response information, chemical storage information, and other facility EHS documentation. Prepare summaries, visuals, and status updates for EHS projects, inspections, and leadership reviews. Project and Cross-Functional Support Support EHS aspects of facility projects, equipment installations, equipment moves, decommissioning activities, and small improvement projects. Work with Maintenance, Facilities, Engineering, Operations, and contractors to collect field information, verify documentation, and help close project-related EHS actions. Participate in continuous improvement activities such as Gemba walks, 5S, corrective action reviews, and risk reduction projects. Complete an agreed-upon internship project and present key findings, results, and recommendations to site leadership. Working Conditions Work will include a combination of office work, documentation, meetings, and time on the manufacturing floor. The intern may be required to wear site-required PPE, such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection, gloves, or other PPE depending on the work area. No regular travel is required, but there may be opportunities to visit other Corning facilities. Potential Internship Project Areas Machine guarding and equipment risk assessment support Emergency response map, wall poster, or flip book updates Hazardous waste inspection and recordkeeping improvement project Gensuite cleanup, reporting, or compliance calendar support Industrial hygiene exposure documentation or chemical inventory support Contractor safety, hot work, LOTO, or non-routine task checklist improvement Ventilation, airflow, rooftop equipment, or facility inspection support under guidance Experiences/Education - Required Actively enrolled in a college or university program pursuing a degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related technical field. Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply. Prior manufacturing, laboratory, maintenance, facilities, or EHS experience is helpful but not required. Ability to work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer, based on business needs and school schedule. Preferred Qualifications Interest in manufacturing safety, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, facilities, maintenance, or engineering support. Experience with data organization, checklists, dashboards, CAD drawings, SharePoint, or EHS management systems. Effective written communication and presentation skills. Reliable, curious, safety-minded, and comfortable working in a hands-on manufacturing environment. This position does not support immigration sponsorship. ​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.
