About this role

Job Title: Student Success Counselor Location: Meadows of Dan Elementary School & Woolwine Elementary School General Description: Provide behavioral assistance and support to students experiencing emotional challenges. Mental health services will be provided both in and out of the classroom setting and will focus on assisting students in becoming more productive in the classroom. Requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree from accredited University or College- degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling Education, Human Services, or related field preferred.

• Being licensed in the State of Virginia to provide mental health services is preferred.

• Must possess a strong knowledge of the common diagnoses and treatments for school-aged children.

Reports To Building Principal Essential Job Functions:

• Provides direct mental health services, including intake assessment and individual/group/family therapy.

• Acts as an advocate for families and students in order to coördinate services for students in crisis situations.

• Refers students/families to community resources or to specialists as necessary.

• Guides students in the development of skills and strategies for dealing with identified concerns.

• Implements immediate behavioral interventions through redirection.

• Provides therapeutic activities outside the classroom as needed to allow students a movement, focus, and calm-down break so they can return to the classroom and return to being productive.

• Provides behavior management through recognition of triggers and utilization of de-escalation strategies.

• Provides medication education as needed to students and/or caregivers.

• Consults with collaborate with educators and others involved with the student to plan and implement a behavior modification plan.

• Provides in-class observations, feedback, and/or recommendations to educators on how to improve their classroom dynamics through the implementation of various behavior strategies.

• Participates in the collection of mental health information and student data to be used for monitoring the overall performance and effectiveness of services provided.

• Provides support to principals, families, and students regarding students with poor school attendance and/or academic progress.

• Performs home visits, as needed.

• Additional duties, as assigned.
