The job of the Library/Media Instructor is to maintain the library collection, identify age appropriate resources to support learning, help others find information, instruct and encourage use of library, media, and reading to build confidence, independence, and promote an interest in literature. This position works in partnership with the Library/Media Specialist. The job reports to the Building Administrator. __________________________________________________________________________________
Essential Functions
• Assists teachers, students, administrators, and community members in identifying resource materials.
• Processes donations and trades from students for lost and/or damaged books for the purpose of providing reimbursement to the district.
• Utilizing the library/media specialist lesson plans, instructs classes and/or activities in a variety of formats for the purpose of educating and promoting the use and enjoyment of literature and media including proper public etiquette and use of media/library information, literacy skills and resources.
• Evaluates books and/or periodicals for retention within the collection which includes giving input regarding new materials for retention within the collection, repairing damaged books, and weeding of old materials for the purpose of ensuring the usability and value of books and library materials. Process and coordinate with the District Office to recycle old materials.
• Maintains material organization, displays, bulletin boards, shelf and furniture arrangement for the purpose of providing inspiration and efficient operations of the library and student access to materials and information.
• Maintains resources inventory for the purpose of providing up-to-date references.
• Directly supervises student activities for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment conducive to learning.
• Oversees students and/or volunteers for the purpose of providing orientation, training, performing library tasks, and ensuring tasks are completed accurately.
• Performs circulation activities (e.g. item check-in and checkout, prepare circulation count, lists of overdue items) for the purpose of controlling the use, location, and availability of items in the collection.
• Prepares computerized and manual reports (e.g. collection statistics, scheduling reports/requests, renewal information, overdue lists, fines, costs) for the purpose of providing documentation and information to others.
• Processes library books, periodicals, software, and related media materials (e.g. logging into master files, cataloging, barcoding, cleaning, covering, shelving, producing required reports).
• Processes new, returning, and withdrawn student and staff library records, e-book accounts; notices of missing, damaged, or overdue books, media and materials for the purpose of providing and/or maintaining access to library resources and securing reimbursement for losses.
• Enters information for fines and returns of missing library materials into individual student district accounts (Skyward) in conjunction with the building secretaries.
• Responds to inquiries of students, staff, and parents (e.g. availability of books, finding appropriate reference documents, status of overdue fines, etc.)
• Working with Library Media Specialist, maintains and updates School Library Web Page for the purpose of keeping students and community informed of expectations and library resources.
• Actively researching and applying for grants and other assistance to support the programs on a district-wide basis.
Other Functions
• Participates in meetings, workshops, etc. as required for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
• Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly workplace.
• Assists Library/Media Specialist in reviewing, sharing, Follett online collections and resources.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications, and preparing and maintaining accurate records KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: customer and public relations techniques, phone and online customer etiquette, concepts of grammar and punctuation, library practices, Dewey Decimal System, terminology and procedures; age appropriate literature; computer and internet operations, must have a working knowledge of Library Computer programing, Publisher, and outlook, basic uses and structure of MARC (Machine Assisted Readable Cataloging) and RDA (Resource Description and Access) records; book repair and maintenance. ABILITY Exercise independent judgment and tactics in the applications of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures and in difficult or sensitive situation in person, over the telephone, or in an office environment, flexibility to continuously re-prioritize duties and responsibilities, able to multitask efficiently, competently and accurately in an environment with frequent interruptions, able to work independently and be self-directed while also working as a team member, able to work in a multicultural and diverse environment, ability to lead and train others, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the public, other individuals from outside agencies.
Responsibility Responsibilities include: working with little to no supervision following standardized practices and/or methods, leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others.
Working Environment Functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. The employee must know how to regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The employee will be exposed to dust, and high, precarious places (high shelves and step stools). The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience - Job related experience is desired. Education - Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Bachelor's degree; or Associates degree or equivalent and two (2) years of experience in a library environment; or Library Support Staff Certificate and two (2) years of experience in a library environment; or High School graduate and four (4) years of experience as a para educator along with a score of 70% or higher on the library assistant proficiency test.
