Job SummaryYou will serve as a RIGGING WORKER in the LIFTING AND HANDLING DEPARTMENT, RIGGING AND OPERATIONS DIVISION of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do work of the position without more than normal supervision: - The ability to work with knots, hitches, able to splice rope, cable and fabricate various types of ship rigging and weight handling gear. - Determine the placement of gear to assure loads are secure, balanced, and attaching tag lines to control unnecessary movement of the load. - Ability to use math and physics to determine weights, stresses, strengths, and mechanical advantage. - Determine exact placement of such items as padeyes, beam clamps, and chain falls used to support and balance load during movement. - Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, and Task Group Instruction (TGIs). Major DutiesYou will be required to lift/move buildings, heavy equipment or other loads.You will assist in the ship docking operation by laying out and handling lines and tackle, snubbing lines on cleats or bollards, hauling on lines with capstans, and performing similar duties.You will direct operators of cranes or other weight handling equipment by standard signals.You will fabricate and repair wire cable or fiber rope articles such as slings, towing bridles, nets, rope ladders, and other boat rigging and weight handling gear.
