QualificationsQualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/04/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. You must submit transcripts. -OR- B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience, must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for indicating clearly the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions.) SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: taking samples; handling various types of instruments and equipment; reporting findings orally and in writing; performing field work which includes technical observance of exploration and classification of geologic materials in accordance with field manual; field mapping; and interpretation of data. -OR- One full year of graduate level education in the field of geology or directly related field of study; -OR- an equivalent combination of experience and education; -OR- demonstrate Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Successfully completed a bachelor's degree in a directly related field AND meet one of the following: (1) Class Standing: rank in the upper 3rd of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, based on the completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (GPA): earn a GPA of (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) based on 4 years of education, or based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum -or- (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field, or the required courses completed during the final two years. Note: GPA will be rounded to one decimal place, for example, 2.95 = 3.0, 2.94 = 2.9; OR (3) Membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society. You must submit transcripts. To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: performing geological studies and preliminary analyses; performing calculations and applying correction factors; plotting of preliminary prediction values for portions of larger studies; identifying fossils, rock samples, and determining extent of formation; -OR- 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in the field of geology or directly related fields of study; -OR- have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education in excess of the first year of may be combined with experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: performing duties associated with geological investigations including the collection, interpretation, analysis of geologic data, preparation of reports, figures, and presentations and project management. -OR- 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the field of geology or directly related fields of study; -OR- have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education in excess of the first two years may be combined with experience. Major DutiesSome of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Serve as principal advisor to the Field Manager on technical and regulatory actions affecting the minerals programs and write reports and recommendations regarding mineral issues in support of other activities or proposals, such as lands actions. Review mining notices and plans of operations for regulatory and technical adequacy; calculate reclamation cost estimates; process mineral material sales and free use permits; and inspect mining operations to ensure compliance with plan and performance standards. Prepare and update the minerals and geology sections for the planning area of the Field Office through field examinations, research, review of reports, and collaboration with other agencies, institutions, and industry. Create reports and appraisals on mineral leases, sales and mining operations, review exploration or development/operating plan for adequacy and prepare mineral reports on salable and locatable mineral potential. Review Applications for Permit to Drill and drilling plans for regulatory and technical accuracy; evaluate the stratigraphy, hydrology, coring, logging testing, and geologic hazards and write geologic reports. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.RequirementsMust be a U.S. Citizen or National.
