About the role:
The Reliability Engineer, based in Adelaide, will be a core member of the Product Improvement team, responsible for building and leading Chrysos’s reliability engineering capability – turning fleet fault and failure data into prioritised design and process improvements that increase equipment reliability and reduce unplanned downtime across the global PhotonAssay™ fleet.
What you will do:
• Own Post Change Validation (PCV) within the Product Change Order (PCO) process: for each PCO, define success criteria and verification methodology up front, execute or coordinate the check at the appropriate interval, and report outcomes – including negative results – back to the design/process owner and leadership.
• Lead fleet-wide fault and failure data analysis, working closely with the Maintenance Data Scientist, to identify recurring failure modes and quantify their impact on unit availability.
• Facilitate root cause investigations for safety and reliability incidents, coordinating input from electrical, controls, mechanical, physics, and software subject matter experts.
• Develop and maintain a failure mode taxonomy (FMEA-based) across priority PhotonAssay™ subsystems, working with Product Improvement, Product Development and Maintenance teams to capture root cause at the point of failure.
• Support Product Improvement, Supply Chain and Maintenance on reliability-critical component obsolescence by quantifying fleet failure risk to inform LTB quantities and retrofit priority for existing units, balancing spares holding cost against downtime risk.
• Provide regular reports to the Product Optimisation Manager and Technical Leads on fault trends, investigation outcomes and PCV results.
• Act as a key point of technical liaison with Nuctech and other engineering partners on reliability-related investigations.
• Display role model behaviour to Chrysos’ culture of safety and zero-harm.
• Collaborate with Product Improvement engineers to prioritise and scope design corrective actions arising from fleet fault data.
• Work closely with the Maintenance Data Scientist to define reliability questions and success criteria, and to translate statistical/predictive outputs into practical maintenance and design actions.
• Work with Maintenance specialists to review Maintenance procedures and strategies and assist with making necessary improvements.
• Provide reliability input at new product design gates (concept, detail design, pre-launch), including reliability targets, DFMEA participation, incorporation of field failure history, and identifying diagnostic data/instrumentation needs.
• Liaise with Deployment and Maintenance teams to support accurate root-cause data capture at the point of failure.
• Engage closely with Nuctech and other suppliers on failure investigations and design reliability improvements.
• Build and continuously refine the failure mode taxonomy and root-cause data capture methodology across the fleet.
• Stay informed of industry best practice in reliability engineering (RCM, FMEA, RCA) and incorporate relevant methodologies into Chrysos processes.
Who you are:
Essential
• A tertiary qualification in engineering (mechanical, electrical, mechatronic or related discipline).
• 4–7 years’ experience in an engineering role, including demonstrated experience in RCA, FMEA or RCM methodologies.
• Experience interpreting fault, failure or maintenance data to identify trends and prioritise action (formal data science training not required, but must be data literate).
• Ability to work across mechanical, electrical, controls and software disciplines at a level sufficient to frame problems, and engage subject matter experts.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the preparation of clear technical reports and recommendations for leadership.
• Able and willing to travel both interstate and internationally (subject to Australian Government travel restrictions).
Desirable
• Formal certification or training to reliability engineering methodologies (RCM, FMEA, RCA, or similar).
• Experience with automation systems (PLC/controls, drives, sensors, interlocks) sufficient to understand and interrogate fleet failure modes in these systems.
• Experience working closely with data scientists or data analysts on fault/failure data.
• Experience with CMMS systems and fault/maintenance data structures.
• Experience working with global teams and cultures, including OEM and manufacturing partners
