On the 1 August 2026, the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent formed a pioneering new multi-university group called London and South-East (LASE) University Group.

This opportunity is hosted and supported by the School of Design and Creative Industries in the Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences. We are looking for a Research Fellow in virtual production to contribute to a research project within the Shared Hub for Immersive Future Technologies:

This is a short term fractional position over 9 weeks, during which you will contribute to the research project XR-Sync (Extended Reality Stage Synchronization), which aims to develop robust workflows to blend virtual sets with physical stages in real time. The project will:

Synchronise VR headset views with the VP stage’s real-world tracking data. Deliver adaptable XR workflow solutions across a range of accessible systems, using diverse tracking systems, LED volumes and VR Headsets. Bring together academic (University of Greenwich) and industry expertise Leverage our AHRC funded facilities (Shared Hub for Immersive Future Technologies (SHIFT), University of Greenwich,

By synchronizing the headset view with the stage’s real-world tracking data, users can step onto the stage and see the 3D environment precisely overlaid in their headset with accurate scale and alignment. This immediate, interactive visual feedback will enable creative teams to build, arrange, and refine set pieces and actor positions in real-time, reducing errors and guesswork in combining physical props with virtual sets.

The outcomes of this work will enhance on-set efficiency, and enable real-time, on-stage exploration and decision-making for directors and crews working in Virtual Production filmmaking.

The person appointed will be expected to:

Support the Principal Investigator of XR-Sync in data analysis and in report and academic paper writing, in order to meet project aims and objectives and deliver required outputs. Support PI and other colleagues in the delivery of high quality, public facing research events, conferences or industry talks. Engage in research and enterprise and in so doing contribute to the research profile of the Shared Hub for Immersive Future Technologies and to the REF submission of the University of Greenwich.
