About this role

Job summary We would like to invite candidates to apply for a Specialty Doctor role to join the Breast Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital on a permanent basis. The focus of the role will be to ensure that national and local targets are met managing the rising cancer 2 week wait referrals and treatment to target times. You will join an existing team of two Oncoplastic Surgeons, an Associate Specialist, two Trust Doctors, and three Breast Radiologists. The post holder should demonstrate ability to work flexibly and within a team.

Main duties of the job This opportunity would ideally suit someone looking to further their career and scopes of practice with the possibility to work towards the specialist register via the Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR). The department has an excellent reputation for supporting specialty trainees and providing the knowledge and support required.

The Breast Unit houses both the symptomatic service and the Epping Breast Screening Service.

Main duties of the job

The specialty doctor in breast surgery will provide high quality, patient centred care as part of the multidisciplinary breast team. The post holder will contribute to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of patients with benign and malignant breast disease. They will support elective and outpatient services whilst participating in multidisciplinary meetings, local clinical governance, education and service development.

The role offers opportunities to develop specialist breast surgery skills, including complex oncoplastic techniques, and contribute to delivering an efficient, evidence-based breast service.

The post suits a Speciality Doctor in Breast Surgery with experience to run breast clinics (rapid diagnosis one stop, results and follow up) and support the breast theatre lists. The focus will be to work collaboratively with the existing team and to manage the rising cancer 2 week wait referrals and treatment to target times. Of note, this post has no General Surgery commitments.

Clinical governance is an essential component of this role. The appointee will be expected to contribute and participate in governance activities in depth and breadth, including audit and quality improvement projects. A strong desire to improve governance standards is essential.

The post-holder will have an overriding duty of care to patients and will be expected to comply fully with best practice standards and local guidelines.

The post holder will be required to help raise the profile of the service and is expected to carry out teaching and contribute to the post graduate and continual medical education activities to the local hospital and beyond.

The post-holder will be accountable to Divisional Medical Director and Medical Director. The appointee will be required to work on two different sites: Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, and St Margaret’s Hospital, Epping.

The job is offered as a full-time post on a 10 PA basis but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. The job plan includes direct clinical care (DCC) such as clinics, theatre lists, patient administration, inpatient care, ward rounds, ward referrals, MDT and supporting professional activity (SPA).

Current NHS experience of triple assessment of breast disease Experience of working within a breast MDT Experience of interpreting breast imaging reports in clinic Experience of communicating benign and malignant diagnoses to patients Experience performing breast procedures, such as: Core Biopsy Fine needle aspiration Experience in breast cancer follow-up and survivorship clinics Experience contributing to service improvement or audit Broad experience in breast surgery Competence with managing breast surgery patients in the pre and post operative setting
