We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team at Newcastle Hospitals. The successful candidate will join a team of 14 Consultants providing comprehensive orthopaedic trauma services at the Major Trauma Centre, at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, and will also be part of the upper limb orthopaedic team at RVI.
Main duties of the job
o The successful candidate will join the existing orthopaedic trauma 'on-call' rota at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. This will involve making up a team of four Consultants, each doing one 'on-call' weekday (during which the team fracture clinics take place) every four weeks, followed by an all-day trauma list on the following day. In addition, the successful candidate will be 'on-call' for orthopaedic trauma one weekend in 13.
o The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a special interest in upper limb surgery, to complement the existing surgeons within the team.
o The successful candidate will be required to:
o provide an elective surgery service.
o Participate in audit and clinical governance.
o Show a commitment to continuing professional development.
o Participate in annual appraisal (for revalidation) and in the annual job planning process.
o Work with and support all members of the clinical team in the Emergency Department, in out-patient and fracture clinics, in the operating theatres and on the wards.

Research:
The successful candidate will be encouraged to undertake research appropriate to their clinical or academic interests. There are ample research opportunities within the Trust and associated universities (Newcastle and Northumbria).
Newcastle University has established research programmes in bone biology, muscle disease, inflammatory arthritis, biomechanics and education. There is a strong clinical research faculty and Clinical Trials Unit. The MSU has its own dedicated team of research nurses and physiotherapists (and the role of Lead Clinician for Orthopaedic Research is currently vacant).
Teaching:
There are multi-disciplinary trauma meetings each day at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, as well as weekly fracture teaching sessions and a monthly journal club.
There are monthly trauma business meetings at Royal Victoria Infirmary.
All Consultants participate in the teaching/training of surgical trainees at both the Royal Victoria Infirmary and at Freeman Hospital.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the formal sessions of the Regional Postgraduate Orthopaedic Training Programme.
The successful candidate will be able to contribute to the teaching of undergraduate medical students.

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills Essential
Primary Medical Qualification. Full GMC Registration. Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register by time of appointment. FRCS (Orth) or equivalent.
Desirable
Higher Degree. Special skills training in the specialty. MD/PhD
Clinical Experience Essential
Minimum of 2 years experience in shoulder and elbow elective surgery with speciality training and post CCT fellowship training combined, at least one year of which must have been within last 2 years. Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty. Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality. Minimum of six months Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship (post CCT) in a UK Major Trauma Centre - or overseas equivalent. Minimum of six months fellowship training (post CCT) in upper limb Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
Desirable
Sub-speciality specialist training in upper limb surgery to complement existing skills within the Directorate.
Management and Administration Experience Essential
Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty. Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines. An understanding of Clinical Governance.

Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals. Evidence of leadership / project management. Evidence of having implemented change. Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
Teaching Essential
Experience of supervising junior medical staff. Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.

Research Essential
Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings. Research/critical review of literature. Publications in the last five years.
