Main duties of the job

We are looking to appoint between 1-2 extremely motivated and ambitious trust doctors (registrar ST3+) to join our team of 8 clinical fellows/trust doctors who provide middle grade cover for our service. The registrar will be supported by an excellent team of advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs) on the ward as well as 3 surgical care practitioners (SCPs) in theatre. This post is for a doctor who has completed CST training who wishes to gain some more clinical and operative experience in cardiothoracic surgery or for a more senior trainee/surgeon who would like to develop further subspecialty interest including MCS and transplant.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications Essential

Primary Medical Qualification. Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months Ability to work in the UK

Desirable

Completed core surgical training MRCS or any equivalent diplomas FRCS (C-Th)

Clinical Skills and Knowledge Essential

Good history & examination skills. Able to formulate a working diagnosis. Able to order appropriate investigations. Image interpretation relevant to practice. Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague. Current ALS registration Experience as a cardiothoracic SHO (at least 6 months)

Desirable

Experience as a registrar in cardiothoracic surgery CALS/ATLS

Maintaining Clinical Competence Essential

Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments Logbook of surgical procedures

Desirable

Willingness to take responsibility for own learning Attending courses and conference for CPD

Teaching Essential

Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors

Desirable

Formal teaching of medical/nursing students Train the trainers course Faculty of any courses

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research Essential

Experience of audit projects. Evidence of presentations at meetings

Desirable

Evidence of closing the audit loop Involved in writing local departmental guidelines Evidence of publications relevant to the specialty Evidence of presentations at national/international meetings
