About this role

Salary (non-negotiable) $54,600 - $75,462 with benefits package Paygrade 12 Hours 12 months, 40 hours, 260 days Contract Unit: This position is part of the non-supervisory support services bargaining unit. FLSA: Non-Exempt Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED.

• Eligible for certification as a Driver Instructor by the Maryland State Department of Education.

• Commercial driver's license with “P,” “S,” and airbrake endorsements.

• Five (5) years of successful school bus driving experience.

• Thorough knowledge of the laws, regulations, policies, procedures, methods and techniques used to supervise, instruct and evaluate school bus drivers.

• Possess the ability to demonstrate and perform effective driving skills.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to develop positive working relationships with board of education staff, parents, school bus contractors, school vehicle drivers and local and state agencies.

• Ability to organize and maintain records and documents.

• Ability to handle stressful situations and make appropriate decisions in emergency situations.

• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.

• Must be void of any conflicting interest with existing Wicomico County school bus contractors.

• Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.

• Flexibility to work unusual hours.

• Must provide a cell phone for use on the job for which the employee will receive a stipend.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct both classroom and behind-the-wheel preservice instructional programs for school bus driver applicants.

• Conduct pre-service training for bus assistants.

• Plan and conduct classroom in-service training for school bus drivers and bus assistants.

• Explain and demonstrate safe school bus driving skills.

• Conduct school vehicle driver evaluations as required by COMAR.

• Conduct school bus assistant evaluations.

• Participate in driver instructor workshops under the auspices of MSDE and willingness to participate in other professional development opportunities.

• Provide instruction in school vehicle driver duties and responsibilities as required by federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

• Assist in the administration of the drug and alcohol testing program for school vehicle drivers.

• Investigate school vehicle accidents and accidents involving Board of Education vehicles. Compile information to complete accident reports for submission to appropriate agencies.

• Maintain files pertaining to school vehicle drivers, bus assistants and bus contractors.

• Certify that all school vehicle driver candidates have satisfactorily completed all program requirements.

• Assist in yearly bus inspections.

• Maintain accurate training records, equipment inventory and inspection records for the fleet.

• Maintain confidentiality as applicable to transportation matters.

• Assist with the coverage of school vehicle routes.

• Assist with the retrieval and review of school vehicle surveillance videos.

• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
