Job Title: High School Head Varsity Softball Coach Location: Floyd County Public Schools, Virginia Reports To: Athletic Director/Principal Job Description: The High School Coach is responsible for developing and leading a competitive athletic program that prioritizes student-athlete development, sportsmanship, and team success. This role encompasses skill development, mentorship, and fostering a positive team culture that aligns with the school and division's values and goals. Qualifications:
• Demonstrated expertise in the specific sport to be coached.
• Previous coaching experience at the high school level or higher (preferred).
• Must meet all requirements for coaching certification in Virginia, including CPR/First Aid certification and completion of required training programs (e.g., VHSL courses).
• Strong communication and leadership skills to work effectively with student-athletes, parents, and staff.
• Commitment to upholding high standards of sportsmanship, safety, and academic achievement for all student-athletes.
Performance Responsibilities: Program Leadership
• Develop and implement practice plans, strategies, and game plans aligned with the team's developmental goals and competitive objectives.
• Foster an inclusive, respectful, and supportive team environment where all student-athletes feel valued and motivated.
• Establish clear team expectations and enforce rules and discipline fairly and consistently.
• Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes, demonstrating integrity, dedication, and sportsmanship.
Athlete Development
• Teach fundamental skills, strategies, and techniques specific to the sport.
• Promote the physical, mental, and emotional development of student-athletes.
• Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes, providing guidance and support as needed.
• Encourage and model healthy lifestyle choices and emphasize the importance of balancing academics and athletics.
Team Management
• Coordinate all team activities, including practices, games, tournaments, and travel arrangements.
• Manage equipment, uniforms, and supplies responsibly, ensuring proper care and inventory.
• Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and stakeholders, addressing concerns and providing updates as needed.
• Collaborate with assistant coaches and support staff to maximize program efficiency and effectiveness.
Compliance and Safety
• Adhere to all school, district, region, and Virginia High School League (VHSL) policies and regulations.
• Maintain the safety and well-being of all student-athletes during practices, games, and related activities.
• Respond promptly and appropriately to injuries, emergencies, and other unexpected situations.
• Complete and maintain all required certifications, including training in first aid, CPR, and concussion management.
Professional Development
• Attend coaching clinics, workshops, and other professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices and innovations in coaching.
• Actively participate in school athletic department meetings and initiatives.
Community Engagement
• Build positive relationships with parents, community members, and supporters of the athletic program.
• Represent the school and team in a manner that reflects positively on the district and community.
• Support and promote school-wide events, activities, and traditions.
• Ensure that parents are included in all communications sent to players, including schedules, expectations, and updates.
