Job summary
West Rainton Surgery are looking to recruit a 16-hour Pharmacy Technician. We are a supportive, forward-thinking teaching and training practice who can be flexible to accommodate the right candidate, With a team of 3 GP partners, 3 salaried GPs, GP registrars, a practice nurse, nurse practitioner, a Diabetes specialist nurse, 2 health care assistants, a nursing associate, Pharmacist, GP Assistant, Care Co-ordinators, practice manager, finance manager and a team of receptionists and secretaries. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will be part of our Pharmacy team but will mainly work alongside our practice Pharmacist. Many of our team members have been part of our practice for over 15 years and we pride ourselves on being a great place to work.

Main duties of the job
The candidate must be able to communicate effectively with the wider healthcare team, patients and the public, whilst ensuring and maintaining confidentiality and privacy.
In addition, as a pharmacy technician you need to be:
Responsible, accurate and methodical Able to pay close attention to detail Aware of when to escalate to Practice Pharmacist and / or other members of the Healthcare team Able to understand the laws and relevant guidelines on medicines Able to read and follow instructions Interested in people's health Able to explain information clearly to members of the public Able to demonstrate excellent patient management skills
About us
We are situated very close to the A1 between Durham and Houghton Le Spring, in a purpose-built building which is has been newly renovated to accommodate our very bright and exciting future. The building work has increased the size of the building and include an additional 3 large consulting rooms, making our practice a truly great place to work.

The practice maintains a very high QOF achievement, offering additional services such as diabetic clinics, minor surgery procedures, dermatology and sexual health.
The practice uses SystmOne, supported by systems such as ACCURX, GP Team Net and transcribed dictation systems.
CQC inspected the practice as Outstanding in 2025, with very high patient satisfaction, with consistently positive FFT feedback month on month.
Job description Job responsibilities
The Pharmacy Technician will support the Practice with work on medication safety audits, medication monitoring, repeat prescribing processes, medication queries, secondary care medication related workstreams.
The Key areas of responsibility include:
High-Risk medication monitoring (Shared Care medication) DOAC Monitoring General medication queries from Patients / Secondary care (both Face to face and over the phone) Assistance with reviewing Hospital discharges and Secondary care clinic letters General QOF Medication monitoring audits Provide information to patients and other Healthcare professionals on medicines. Appliance requests from Appliance contractors Medication-related safety audits Basic medication follow-ups Medicines Optimisation workstreams Safety as well as cost saving work Record keeping for Privately Prescribed medication Management of medication shortages Synchronisation of repeat medications EPS related queries The Pharmacy Technician will play a vital role in helping patients get the best outcome from their medicines and helps to ensure our patients are safe whilst taking prescribed medication. The areas of responsibility will involve liaising with patients and other healthcare professionals to ensure the effective and safe use of medicines.
As a Pharmacy Technician, you will work under the supervision of our Practice Pharmacist; however, they must be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC and are therefore responsible and accountable for their own accurate and safe practice
