Job summary

We are offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced Prescriptions Clerk to join our team.

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our prescription system.

There is the opportunity to continue or join the NHS pension scheme.

Hours are flexible for the right person and there is an opportunity to combine the role with receptionist and admin work.

Main duties of the job

The Prescription Clerk provides support to our clinical team by assisting in the receipt and preparation of repeat prescriptions for our 11,900 patients. You will support the Pharmacy team and GPs in managing repeat prescriptions and medication queries. You will be liaising on sensitive medical information, so a caring customer service communication style is essential.

You will also facilitate effective communication between patients, members of the primary health care team, secondary care and other associated healthcare agencies.

The ideal candidate would be willing to help cross cover reception/admin roles where needed.

Job description Job responsibilities

To process promptly and safely any medication requests received by various means of patient communication to include monitoring the generic practice email, online services and paper requests.Working closely alongside the practice prescribing team which includes pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and prescribers (ANP and GP's) aswell as our full complement of reception & administrative staff.Follow up prescription requests/queries via the practice task system safely and efficientlyInvolvement in set up and administration of repeat dispensingTo liaise with patients and local pharmacies regarding queries and where necessary advising prescribers of alternatives where stock is unavailable, as appropriateReconciling medications from hospital letters to ensure their medication lists are updated so this can be checked by the Pharmacy TeamTo ensure repeat medication is issued in line with the practice policy & protocols that are already in placeTo ensure that patient queries which require escalation to a prescriber are highlighted to the relevant ClinicianTo partake in audit work for the practice in relation to medication and prescribing, running clinical reports and communicating information with the practice teamOrganising blood tests (through ICE system) or blood pressure checks for patients (and any other relevant tests that may be required) which are necessary to the patient's prescribing needs and ensuring recalls relevant to drug safety are maintainedGeneral ad hoc administration work as required by the practiceFlexibility to cover other areas when requiredKeep up-to-date with all prescribing guidelines and protocols, relevant to the position.To thrive in this role, you will need to be very organised, flexible and have good communication skills. The ability to focus and attention to detail are imperative.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths

Desirable

A recognised qualification in healthcare administration or pharmacy support (e.g., NVQ, BTEC, or equivalent). Training in medicines management and/or medicines optimisation

Experience Essential

Previous experience in a healthcare setting, ideally within a GP practice or pharmacy. Experience of delivering customer service (ideally within an NHS setting or similar community health provider). Administrative experience.

Desirable

Familiarity with the electronic prescription system and the workings of a GP practice pharmacy team. Experience working with SystemOne clinical system Experience working as a prescription clerk Experience of medicines management Prior experience of working in a community or hospital pharmacy

Knowledge and skills Essential

Ability to prioritise and work to deadlines Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with patients, healthcare professionals, and pharmacies. High level of accuracy in processing prescriptions and updating patient records. Ability to work well within a team, supporting colleagues and contributing to a collaborative environment. Understanding of patient confidentiality and data protection regulations. Good understanding of prescription processes and medication terminology.
