Job summary
We are looking for a friendly, reliable and patient-focused Phlebotomist to join our team for 17 hours per week (0.45 WTE). The role will involve providing a safe and efficient blood-taking service, performing venepuncture, correctly handling and labelling samples, maintaining accurate records and following infection prevention procedures. The successful candidate will work closely with the wider clinical team and provide a calm and reassuring experience for patients.
Main duties of the job
Carry out venepuncture safely and effectively. Identify patients and obtain appropriate consent. Correctly label, handle and process blood samples. Ensure samples are stored and transported according to pathology requirements. Maintain accurate patient records and documentation. Follow infection prevention and control procedures. Reassure and support patients, including those who may be anxious or nervous. Recognise and respond appropriately to patients who become unwell during or after blood taking. Maintain a clean, safe and well-stocked clinical environment. Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, HCAs and the wider practice team. Maintain confidentiality and information governance standards.Report any concerns, incidents or difficulties with blood collection appropriately.

Job description Job responsibilities Main Duties and Responsibilities
Undertake venepuncture safely and effectively in accordance with practice and clinical guidelines.Correctly identify patients and obtain appropriate consent before procedures.Collect, label, handle and prepare blood samples accurately for laboratory testing.Ensure samples are stored and transported appropriately and within required timescales.Record relevant information accurately within the patient's clinical record.Provide a professional, friendly and reassuring service to patients.Support patients who may be anxious, nervous or have difficulty with blood collection.Recognise and respond appropriately to patients who become unwell during or following venepuncture.Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control.Ensure clinical areas and equipment are clean, safe and appropriately stocked.Dispose of clinical waste and sharps safely in accordance with policy.Report incidents, concerns, equipment issues or unsuccessful procedures appropriately.Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with information governance requirements.Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, administrative staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.Participate in relevant training and maintain competence in phlebotomy and associated procedures.Undertake other duties appropriate to the role and level of responsibility as required by the Practice Manager or clinical team.

Experience Essential
Qualifications and Training - Recognised phlebotomy training or qualification. - Evidence of ongoing learning and maintaining clinical competence. Experience - Previous experience undertaking venepuncture. - Experience working within a healthcare or clinical environment. - Experience handling and processing blood samples. Skills and Knowledge - Competent and confident in performing venepuncture. - Understanding of infection prevention and control. - Knowledge of safe sample collection, labelling, handling and transportation. - Understanding of patient confidentiality, safeguarding and data protection. - Good organisational and record-keeping skills. Communication - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. - Able to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues. - Able to reassure patients who may be anxious or nervous about blood tests. Personal Qualities - Friendly, approachable and compassionate. - Reliable, punctual and professional. - Patient-focused with a commitment to providing high-quality care. - Able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. - Calm and organised in a busy clinical environment.
Desirable
- Previous experience working within general practice, primary care or an NHS setting. - Experience taking blood from a wide range of patients, including children, older adults and patients with difficult venous access. - Experience supporting anxious or needle-phobic patients. - Familiarity with Systmone clinical systems and electronic patient records. - Knowledge of local pathology and specimen-handling procedures. - Previous safeguarding and infection prevention and control training. - Relevant additional healthcare qualification or experience. - Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team. - Understanding of NHS policies, procedures and standards.
