Job summary

As a Healthcare Assistant at GAB Healthcare, you will play an important role in supporting our clinical team and providing excellent care to our patients. Your duties will include carrying out clinical observations, blood pressure checks, blood tests, ECGs, health checks, NHS Health Checks and other clinical tasks appropriate to your training and experience.

You will work alongside GPs, nurses and our wider multidisciplinary team, helping us to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care to our patients.

Main duties of the job

As a Healthcare Assistant, you will be an important part of our clinical team, helping to provide a welcoming, safe and efficient service for our patients.

You will have a varied role, supporting clinicians with routine patient care and undertaking a range of clinical activities independently within your level of competence. You will have regular contact with patients of all ages and backgrounds, so a friendly, reassuring and professional approach is essential.

The role will involve preparing patients and clinical areas for appointments, obtaining and recording accurate clinical information, recognising when findings may require further clinical review, and ensuring appropriate follow-up or escalation when necessary.

You will also contribute to the smooth running of our clinical services by maintaining high standards of infection prevention and control, ensuring equipment and clinical areas are ready for use, and completing records accurately and promptly.

You will work closely with our GPs, nurses and wider practice team, communicating effectively and contributing to a positive team environment.

This is a varied and rewarding role for someone who enjoys working directly with patients, takes pride in delivering high-quality care and is keen to develop their knowledge and skills within general practice.

Job description Job responsibilities

Job Purpose

To assist the Clinical team in the service and delivery of the care management of the practice population.

Check patients identification against GP records and confirm details with the patient. New Patient Medicals and NHS Health Checks Take physiological measurements from patients including blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm, temperature, height, weight (body mass index), urinalysis. Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient interventions. Clearing and restocking of consulting/treatment rooms, including timely order of stock items under your control. Fridges Record fridge temperatures daily, ensure data loggers checked weeklyvaccine rotation monthly and keep accurate records of stock available. Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being by participating in patient health promotion and screening initiatives. Give accurate and appropriate information to patients within own competence. Ensure that anomalies are reported to a senior member of the clinical team. Notify the GP Principle of any significant patient issues including safeguarding. Ensure full and accurate recording in the patients computerised records. Carry out administrative tasks for example, but not limited to, call and recall activities and stock takes as directed by senior members of the practice team. Chaperoning Phlebotomy Assist with Minor Surgery procedures Administer B12 injections, flu and pneumonia vaccinations, shingles vaccinations under Patient Specific Directions and maintaining cold chain policy with accurate monitoring and recording. Undertake peak-flow measurement, spirometry, suture and clip removal, change dressings and carry out other tasks for which you have received appropriate training. Undertake specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual.

Person Specification

Knowledge Essential

Good understanding of confidentiality, information governance and the importance of maintaining patient dignity and privacy. Understanding of infection prevention and control and safe working practices. Awareness of the importance of accurate clinical documentation and record keeping.

Desirable

Understanding of the role of the HCA within general practice and the wider multidisciplinary team. Awareness of safeguarding, health and safety and consent within a healthcare environment.

Skills and Competencies Essential

Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team while also working independently within own level of competence. Good organisational skills and ability to manage and prioritise a varied workload. Basic IT skills and confidence using electronic systems. Evidence of appropriate clinical training and competency relevant to the duties of the post. Ability to recognise when a patient's condition or clinical observations may require escalation to an appropriate clinician. Willingness to maintain and develop clinical competencies in line with practice requirements.

Desirable

Ability to use clinical equipment confidently and accurately.

Personal Qualities Essential

Caring, compassionate and approachable manner. Reliable, punctual, professional and committed to providing high-quality patient care. Ability to remain calm and professional when working in a busy environment. Willingness to learn, develop and undertake further training. Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes. Willingness and ability to travel between GAB Healthcare sites and other locations as required by the role.

Qualifications Essential

Care Certificate must have been successfully completed and be able to provide evidence of completion. Relevant Level 2 healthcare/clinical qualification or equivalent experience in a healthcare setting. Recognised phlebotomy/venepuncture training. Recognised ECG training. Vaccination and Immunisation training. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) qualification.

Desirable

Level 3 qualification in Health & Social Care, Clinical Healthcare Support or equivalent. INR Star training NHS Health check training

Experience Essential

Previous experience working as an HCA within general practice or primary care. Experience undertaking NHS Health Checks, long-term condition reviews or other preventative health checks. Experience performing ECGs and obtaining routine clinical observations. Experience working with EMIS or another GP clinical system.
