Job SummaryYou will serve as a RIGGER in the Lifting & Handling Department (Code 700), Rigging & Equipment Operations Division (Code 740), Rigging Branch (Code 741) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION Experience applying thorough knowledge of rigging principles and techniques to make difficult decisions relative to load stress and ability to move objects. Experience using complex multipoint suspension techniques to permit maneuvering over and around obstacles. Experience planning, laying out, assembling, repairing, and installing complex weight-handling gear and rigging systems. Experience reading, interpreting, and understanding specifications, procedures, diagrams, and sketches. Experience using working knowledge of submarines and/or surface ship systems, components, compartments, and tanks. Experience directing cranes and operating hoists, forklifts and/ or hand trucks to handle heavier material and equipment. Major DutiesYou will apply a thorough knowledge of rigging principles and techniques to relative to lad stress and ability to move objects.You will utilize a working knowledge of submarines, and or surface ship systems, components, compartments and tanks.You will ensure all bells on cranes are operational, tracks are clear and moving and the tower and bool are before rotating or tracking the crane.You will direct the movement of portal and hammer head or mobile cranes and derricks.You will be responsible for instructing apprentice helpers, rigger workers and or riggers in assigned work.
