Job summary
To provide a clinical role within respiratory physiology at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. Working at the CDC / Derriford and Dartmoor Building.
To plan, undertake and perform simple, specialist, complex and highly complex diagnostic assessments in accordance with ARTP/BTS guidelines.
To provide a highly specialist clinical, technical service which contributes to the diagnosis, management, and further treatment of patients.
The post holder will prioritise demands, accommodate unplanned events and work without supervision.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
Main duties of the job
To deliver Lung Function & Sleep Service to users from appropriate authorised referrals, performing a range of diagnostic tests, presenting results back to the referrer with appropriate comments or report and problem solving.
To support the Senior Specialist Physiologists in developing the service.
To provide educational aspects of clinical physiology within PHT including delivery of education to medical and non-medical members of the multi-disciplinary.
Using a range of highly specialist equipment.

1. To plan, undertake and perform simple, specialist, complex and highly complex diagnostic assessments in accordance with ARTP/BTS guidelines.
a) Spirometry, peak flow rates, flow/volume loops
b) Gas transfer
c) Static lung volumes
d) Reversibility of airways obstruction with bronchodilators
e) Field exercise tests (6MWT)
f) Overnight sleep apnoea screening
g) Arterial blood gas performance and analysis
h) Exhaled and nasal nitric oxide
i) Bronchial provocation tests for the diagnosis of asthma/ bronchial hyper-responsiveness (Mannitol, Exercise-induced asthma)
j) Respiratory muscle assessment
k) CPAP assessment, provision & follow ups
l) Hypoxic challenge
m) Pulmonary shunt assessments
n) Full cardio-pulmonary exercise tests (CPET)
o) Respiratory/ Multi channel sleep studies.
1. Production of reports
2. Verbal and written interpretation to referring medical team and other professionals where appropriate for simple and specialist assessments.
3. As a minimum be trained in Basic Life Support.
COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
1. Obtain brief patient medical history prior to testing to ensure safe practice.
2. Communicate requirements for accurate performance of appropriate investigations to patients/
participants/ subjects/ service users through building and maintaining good rapport.
3. Communicate basic interpretation of results to appropriate senior healthcare professionals, e.g. senior physiologists, consultants, nurses.
OTHER
Service development and improvement.
1. Ensure continual service development and improvement:
a) Through maintaining up to date knowledge of specialist area
b) Obtaining membership and securing roles within national professional body and/or international societies
c) Be regulated via a voluntary/mandatory register of practitioners, e.g. AHCS
2. Ensure equipment used in lung function assessments is functioning correctly by performing a number of calibration and validation techniques including mechanical verification and biological control procedures for quality assurance and quality control
3. Ensure any faulty equipment is reported to senior colleagues and corrective maintenance is undertaken.
4. Occasionally, on request of senior staff within the department, undertake review of department standard operating procedures to ensure these are up to date and fits with current best practice.
5. Ensure that all consumable items required to maintain an efficiently running service are kept stocked and communicate to senior colleagues when ordering of such items are required.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Undergraduate degree in clinical physiology or Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) qualification or equivalent science related subject. Professional Exams a)ARTP Parts I & II b)Associate & Practitioner Certificates Or working towards these. Professional Body Registration a)AHCS b)ARTP (Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology) Or working towards these.
Knowledge and Experience Essential
A thorough proven knowledge of Respiratory and Sleep Physiology A wide range of abilities in performing and reporting lung function tests & sleep monitoring. Demonstrable experience of working in respiratory physiology
Aptitude & Abilities Essential
