About this role

This role is based in the Department's Civil Engineering Building in West Cambridge and will provide technical support across the Division for the Civil Engineering disciplines it supports in Structures, Geotechnics and Construction.

As the Technical Specialist, you will be the key technical resource for electronic and instrumentation elements of projects and will provide technical guidance to other laboratory technicians as well as provide oversight of technical projects as assigned by the Divisional Laboratory Manager. You will be a technical focal point for the Division's Technician support and will ensure that current and future research and teaching activities/needs are met to the highest standards, which includes supporting the smooth and safe running of the facility.

You will report to the Divisional Laboratory Manager and work in conjunction with the Departmental Head of Design and Technical Services to provide the required highly specialised technical support service to research and/or teaching staff. You will also provide cover for the Laboratory Manager during periods of absence as well as support the training of apprentices.

The successful applicant will hold a degree in a relevant research area/ Level 6 vocational qualifications or possess an equivalent level of practical experience and be able to demonstrate a high degree of competency in the use of instrumentation and electronic equipment in a research environment. You will have specialist knowledge and skills in electronics and instrumentation as well as a good knowledge of analysis techniques. You will have strong written and verbal communication skills with proven experience of dealing with a variety of research projects and communicating research results to a wide variety of audiences as well as experience of implementing health and safety requirements within a research environment. Previous experience of providing training to groups and individuals is also a requirement for this role.
