We are looking for an experienced and motivated Registered Nurse to join St Clare Hospice as our Practice Development Nurse.
This newly created role offers an exciting opportunity to help shape education, professional development and clinical practice across the hospice. Working closely with clinical leaders and teams, you will support the development of a skilled, confident and compassionate workforce delivering outstanding palliative and end of life care.
You will:

Main duties of the job The Practice Development Nurse is responsible for coordinating, delivering and supporting education, competency development and workforce development initiatives.
The post holder will ensure that St Clare Hospice staff maintain clinical competence, statutory and mandatory training requirements are met, and that specialist palliative and end-of-life care education is available both within the hospice and across the wider health and social care system.
The role will support the development of a confident and capable workforce able to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care to patients and families.

The Practice Development Nurse plays a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality palliative and end of life care through education, workforce development and clinical practice improvement. Working across hospice services and with external partners, the post holder supports the development of a skilled, competent and confident workforce, ensuring staff have access to the knowledge, training and professional development opportunities required to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care. The role promotes a culture of continuous learning, evidence-based practice and professional development in support of the Hospice's strategic objectives and commitment to excellence in patient care.
Job description Job responsibilities Competency Assessment and Practice Development Facilitate competency assessments and clinical skills sign-off. Develop, implement and maintain competency frameworks and clinical skills passports for Registered Nurses, Nursing Associates and Healthcare Assistants. Support team leaders and managers to ensure staff achieve and maintain required competencies. Monitor competency achievement and identify areas of non-compliance or concern, escalating these appropriately. Identify competency gaps and develop learning interventions to address identified needs. Promote evidence-based practice across hospice services. Support the implementation of new clinical guidelines, policies and procedures. Assist staff in translating learning into clinical practice. Promote reflective practice and lifelong learning. Act as an accessible source of clinical advice and support within own sphere of competence. Support the introduction and development of advanced and specialist nursing roles as directed by the Lead Nurse Practitioner.
Education and Training Deliver education and training programmes for registered nurses, nursing associates, healthcare assistants and volunteers. Support the implementation of the hospice's education and workforce development strategy. Deliver education programmes in line with organisational priorities identified by the Lead Nurse Practitioner and Director of Patient Care and Quality. Support the development of palliative and end-of-life care knowledge and skills relating to progressive neurological conditions across hospice services and external partner organisations. Lead the planning and coordination of statutory and mandatory training programmes, supported by the Education Administrator with booking, scheduling and communication arrangements. Work collaboratively with Clinical Nurse Specialists, medical staff, therapists and other subject matter experts to develop and deliver education programmes. Coordinate educational contributions from specialist clinical staff to ensure training reflects current evidence, best practice and organisational priorities. Develop and maintain teaching materials, educational resources and competency based learning packages. Support the development of specialist palliative and end-of-life care education programmes aligned to organisational and system priorities. Support the development of accredited and non-accredited educational opportunities. Evaluate learning activities and contribute to the continuous improvement of education programmes. Oversee the maintenance of accurate training records, working with the Education Administrator to ensure education databases, attendance records and compliance reports remain up to date. Review mandatory training compliance reports prepared by the Education Administrator and work with managers to address areas of non-compliance. Develop training plans that support staff to maintain essential clinical and nonclinical skills required for safe practice. Contribute to the growth and sustainability of the hospice education offer. Line manage the Education Administrator, providing direction, supervision and support to ensure the effective administration of education programmes, learner records, training compliance monitoring and education events.
Induction, Preceptorship and Professional Development Coordinate and support induction programmes for new clinical staff. Support the delivery of the hospice preceptorship programme. Support staff returning to practice or transitioning into new clinical roles. Assist in identifying learning and development needs across nursing and clinical teams. Support systems for nursing revalidation, clinical supervision and continuing professional development. Contribute to workforce development plans and succession planning initiatives. Support the development of future clinical leaders through mentorship, coaching and role development opportunities.
Student and Learner Support Support nursing students and other learners undertaking placements within the hospice. Work collaboratively with Practice Assessors and Practice Supervisors. Help ensure learners receive a positive, high-quality learning experience. Contribute to learner assessment, feedback and development. Promote St Clare Hospice as a positive learning environment for students and trainees.
External Education and Partnership Working Design, coordinate, deliver and evaluate education programmes for external health and social care professionals to support the delivery of generalist palliative and end-of-life care. Develop productive relationships with care homes, community providers, primary care teams, acute trusts and other partner organisations. Support collaborative working with Integrated Care System partners and external stakeholders to identify palliative and end-of-life care learning needs. Promote the hospice as a centre of excellence for palliative and end-of-life care Support the development of educational resources that improve confidence and capability across the wider health and social care workforce. Develop and maintain effective relationships with universities, placement providers, Integrated Care System partners and other external stakeholders to support workforce development and educational opportunities. Represent St Clare Hospice at relevant education, workforce and practice development meetings as delegated by the Deputy Director of Nursing or Lead Nurse Practitioner. Contribute to partnership working that enhances access to palliative and end-of-life care education across the health and social care system.
Quality Improvement and Clinical Governance Participate in clinical audits, service evaluations and quality improvement projects. Support organisational learning arising from incidents, complaints, safeguarding concerns and patient feedback. Contribute to action plans designed to improve patient care, staff development and service quality. Assist with monitoring compliance with competency, training and professional standards. Contribute to the development and maintenance of safe, effective clinical practice across hospice services. Analyse training and workforce development data and provide reports to senior leaders, supported by information and compliance reports produced by the Education Administrator. Contribute to the development, implementation and review of policies, procedures and guidance relating to education, workforce development, student placements and professional practice. Support educational audits, quality assurance activities and service evaluations to ensure high standards of learning and development are maintained. Assist in the collection, analysis and presentation of education-related data to support quality improvement and service development. Contribute to the preparation of an annual education and workforce development report demonstrating activity, outcomes, impact and future priorities. Support the dissemination of learning and best practice through presentations, conference abstracts, posters and publications where appropriate. Ensure robust education governance processes are maintained through effective oversight of education administration systems, records management and reporting arrangements.
Clinical Role Undertake clinical practice sufficient to maintain professional credibility, competence and current knowledge in palliative and end-of-life care. Act as a professional role model, demonstrating high standards of nursing care. Support nurses and healthcare assistants in the development of clinical knowledge, skills and confidence. Promote compassionate, person-centred and evidence-based care. Maintain professional registration and practise in accordance with the NMC Code.
Professional Responsibilities The post holder will: Maintain active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Practise in accordance with the NMC Code. Maintain their own professional development and competency. Participate in appraisal, clinical supervision and mandatory training. Adhere to all hospice policies and procedures. Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration. Recognised teaching, assessing, mentorship or Practice Assessor qualification.
Desirable
Postgraduate qualification or accredited study in palliative and end-of-life care. Teaching and learning qualification. Qualification or accredited training in education, workforce development, practice development or clinical supervision.
