About this role

A position exists, for a Research Assistant in the Department of Engineering, to work on Advanced Manufacturing and Materials.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are:

Undertake basic research; for example, by preparing, setting up, conducting and recording the outcome of laser powder bed fusion, mechanical testing, and/or microstructure analysis of metal samples.

Custodianship of specific instrumentation, including upgrades, calibration, maintenance and performance checks.

Continue to update knowledge, develop skills, and adapt to new research directions and equipment set up in the research group.

Analyse and interpret the results of own research and generate original ideas based on outcomes; and contribute to the production of research reports and publications.

Develop laboratory protocols of best practice and contribute to a safe and organised research environment, including organising and stocking of consumables.

Assist in the supervision of student projects.

Make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding and form relationships for future collaboration, co-ordinate own work with that of others to avoid conflict, and contribute to the planning of research projects.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

A Bachelor Degree in Mechatronics/Mechanical Engineering/Materials Science or equivalent

Working knowledge of Matlab/Python or equivalent. Experience with programming microcontrollers and with machine learning/AI is a plus.

Being familiar with laser powder bed fusion processes.

A proven ability to communicate with academic and industrial partners both in speaking and in writing.

Ability to manage own workload and to work on multiple tasks in parallel.

Research Assistant: £33,002 - £35,608

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
