Tradesperson I-HVAC

Position Description: Safely performs journeyperson level tasks in the fabrication, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of fixtures, equipment, structures, buildings, and built-in components for Texas Tech facilities. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Major/Essential Functions: • Replaces and repairs HVAC/refrigeration components (compressors, condensers, evaporators, valves).

• Performs preventive maintenance; inspects, calibrates, tests systems; handles CFC recovery and documentation.

• Services gas furnaces and air compressors for safe, efficient operation.

• Maintains mechanical rooms, air handlers, pumps, piping, and insulation.

• Assists Tradesperson Leader with job inspections and site supervision.

• Tracks materials and labor; helps estimate needs and prepare requisitions.

• Maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles; operates and secures work vehicles and sites.

• Provides rotating after-hours and emergency overtime support.

Required Qualifications: Proficiency in written and mathematical skills as may be reflected in the completion of high school or equivalent.

This position requires eligibility to drive TTU vehicles, including a valid U.S. driver license and two years of driving experience.

About the Department and/or College: The Environmental Systems Maintenance (ESM) Shop maintains and services air handlers, exhaust fans, pumps, air conditioning equipment, and fume hoods across the Texas Tech campus. The shop also responds to heating and cooling concerns, working to ensure a safe, comfortable, and efficient learning and working environment.

Pay Statement: Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan.
